I am totally new to boats and would love to hear anyone's opinion on a 1989 Sea Ray open bow 180 19" with a 4.3L Mercruiser V-6 with an Alpha One Drive. Have not yet seen it, just found it on Craigslist.
Thanks in advance!!

What does it look like?
How does it run? If possible you should take it for a test drive on the water, not just run it on the mufflers.
Look at everything real closely.

I few years back i had a 1989 chapperal. Ran like a champ. Looked good. Just need to be carefull.

looks nice.
But don't forget to ask the owner why the engine belts are loose (steering pump and alternator).
If the engine is in good condition and ready to run, why did he loosen the belts?
The boat looks really nice! And seems to be in good condition.

Any boat of that vintage could have problems. When you are looking at boats of this age, the name on the side is irrelevant to the condition or seaworthiness of the vessel. Due diligence on your part is the only way to insure you are buying a quality boat. I had the exact same boat two years ago...the transom was mulch around the keyhole on the bottom 4 inches. I parted it out. If you are not savvy when it comes to fiberglass hulls, get a person who has a few years of experience under his belt to give it the once over for you. $2800 may seem like a good deal until you experience the dreaded soft floor or hull flex from rotten stringers. Good luck.

+1 on this persons reasoning. $2800 sounds good for how the boat looks on the surface, but a bad hull, sterndrive, or motor could make the price more like 8500 or more to get the boat sea worthy
