I went to my marina's Yacht Club meeting last week and was told they have a problem with "Knock, Knock" fish. Apparently these are most likely ordinary male Carp that bang on the bottom of boats in shallow water during spawning season in the middle of the night. The noise is loud enough to keep folks from getting a good night's rest.

One of the major reasons for me getting the bigger 320 was to be able to sleep overnight with our dogs. However, if our deep REM sleep is going to be disrupted by these little bastards, I may stay home. If you think I'm nuts, there is actually an article in the September issue of Boat U.S. magazine about it. You salt water folks have your barnacles and apparently we river rats have to deal with horny carp. So any of you guys been attacked in the middle of the night by these oversexed carp?:smt021

yes constantly, and it's not just the spawning season. They bang on the boat and the dock and eat the algae that floats off. Moral of the story..... keep the bottom of you boat clean and they will move on to your neighbor.

YES all the time in late summer.

Drop an M-80 over the side. That'll fix them... At least until they wake up.

You just gave me an idea to solve the problem. Sort of like attracting deer with a salt lick, just spread some fish food/algae around my neighbor's boats before we go to bed at night, and voila, the carp will do their knocking on their boats where the snacking is better. Yeah! that's the ticket!!:smt038

We have them at our marina. Locally it is rare for them to slap against the hull but they do race up and down the sea wall banging against that making a splashing racket.

Heard them last year when I bought my boat. My first night onboard in the sellers marina I heard this pounding on the hull. Sounded like a diver banging on the bottom. I asked at the marina and was told it was FEMALE carp knocking the eggs loose from their bodies. Never heard it after I moved the boat to saltwater.

It's an issue at our marina... and the m80's only work for a lil bit .. those carp are tough! :smt009.. one guy was so disguntled (or his wife) he poured bleach around his houseboat. I've not had a problem... but I put our uneaten food in an empty slip.

So your saying this would not be the right time to go skinny dippin in your marina?

I've never had a problem with them suckin on my hull with Hydrocoat.

EGGS-actly! They leave a mess under the swim platform. You have to scrub pretty hard to get the eggs off of the boat. My kids can't get over the size of these fish either - Huge and ugly!

Fortunately they only bang on the boats for a few weeks in June. Then all is quiet again. Although this past year seemed more quiet than years past.

We all need to do our part to pollute the water way so we won't have any issue with the marine wild life ever again.

Yep every summer. :smt013. They hit the bottom of my boat and it sounds like a bomb going off. :smt021

I haven't heard them on the boat, but I did here and see them sucking the alge off of my floating dock. It is kind of loud.

I always run the fan on the A/C or heat in order to sleep. I hear the noise early in the AM as the sun comes out. My neighbors boat has not been out in 5 years. His boat has lots of banging going on.
