we bought a 2001 310 sundancer last sept. anyone that could offer any advice, tips or suggestions would be welcomed - summer 2015 can't arrive soon enough!

I am looking at a 2000 310 with V drives and 350 Mercruisers and I am concerned about potential damage by water intrusion in the past. Did you have a mechanical survey done? Did they find anything?

We are looking at 310's 330's and 340's of that era... the "official threads" of those models are excellent buyer resources and should be considered a required read for anyone in the market.
As for the "water intrusion" question; its my understanding that the "log" style exhaust system was most susceptible to water intrusion. I don't think the "water lift muffler" style had intrusion issues.
I think the easiest way to check is to run a compression test.
Good Luck!

You are right to be concerned about the water intrusion but I can tell you from experience that if the correct modifications have been made you should not experience an issue. I've owned my 1999 310DA since July 2002 and the previous owner did have water intrusion in both engines. Mercruiser stepped up and corrected the issue with the new muffler lift exhaust and I haven't had an issue in 12 1/2 years (knock, knock, knock on wood). If it has the old style exhaust then I would request the new exhaust design be implemented or walk away. Even if the current owner has the old exhaust and never had an issue, to me it would be like playing Russian roulette.

Little Bit is correct in suggesting a compression test. A qualified engine surveyor can determine if the engine is currently subject to water intrusion. On a boat that age you really want an engine survey done regardless of past history.

yes, I had a survey done. both secondary exhaust hoses were replaced and swim platform bolts need to be rebeded. not sure what gen exhaust I have and am unaware of any water intrusion?

Was the water intrusion issue mainly with salt water boats? I am looking at the same era boats, but live inland where there are only freshwater boats. All of the ones I have seen still have the old style exhaust. So I am wondering if it was not such an issue out here where boats spent their life in freshwater?

I don't have a specific answer to your question but I would assume that no matter where you boat, if the exhaust design is flawed then you would get water intrusion whether it be fresh or salt water. The salt water would have a much more corrosive effect on the internal parts but fresh water would still eventually cause damage as well, especially if you get enough water in the cylinder to cause a hydro-lock.

And to be fair, I have seen some 310s over the years that have not implemented the new exhaust and are running fine (for whatever reason). I just personally wouldn't want to take the chance.

I am having mine surveyed right now. It has the extended risers and compression is very good on both motors.

I have a 2000 310 SA V drive used in west coast salt all the time. Love this boat. I did alot of research on these boats prior to purchase and especially about the Log muffler system. The problem seemed to stem from not enough drop in the system to discourage water backing up the system. I video scoped the exhaust manifolds prior to purchase along with all the other engine checks. My exhaust has the recommended riser extensions and has a nice steep drop along the required cord of the exhaust. All inspection revealed no water intrusion issue. It also has the plastic resonaters in the exhaust tubes after the elbows. Needless to say, this boat now has 1120 hours and I purchased it with a little over 600 hours. I do take precautions on coming off plane so as not to jam water into the exhaust outlets but have on occasion come off plane too quickly for my liking and have never had a problem. The engines run and are perfect for their time. I did change all the exhaust manifolds ,risers and elbows at 1000 hrs as a precaution. I was glad I did because once apart, I could see that little telltale sign of rust bubbles on the inside of the exhaust manifolds which shows they are starting to bleed from the inside out.(Rot) They looked fine on the outside though. If you find one of these exhaust systems, check the engine properly and know what you are buying. I have never had an issue and would not hesitate to do it again.
