I have been reading a lot of posts on CSR. I know people are self serving but if someone asks a question just give him the answer if you know it. I’m getting a little tired of reading go look it up! Have you tried the search bar thy give you 45 posts to read you waist 20 minuets to you find the answer you are looking for? Lets be polite and understanding of all are members remember there are no dump questions. Let’s help one and all. Thank you.

You should have used the search feature before posting this, there are numerous posts about this topic and other dump questions. :smt001
 
I recently tried to search for something I know is here, never did find it. The search feature does not always work, I know you have to feed it the right information, which in my case I thought I had. I usually find what I am looking for, some folks have trouble with search terms (key words) to get the results they want, get a lot of stuff that does not apply and give up or after awhile don't even try anymore out of frustration just like those that say, "why didn't you search for it" out of frustration for the same type post again. Quite often what sounds like the same question is actually looking for a different answer in some way.
 
I think the search tool can be very valuable and should be used. However, I also agree that you can't always find what you're looking for in a timely manner. In cases like that, if you've spent some time trying to find it and can't, go ahead and post. (besides, if you're like me, you'll probably find something else interesting along the way) Although, it might be good to start your post with something like "I tried searching for this answer, but wasn't very successful". At least that way people know that you did make an attempt to try to find out that information for yourself.
 
"If you know, just post the answer" is quite easy to say, but have you ever considered how much time it takes to write complete answers to questions?

When the question is simple like "What channel do bridge operators use?" I tend to agree with you, but what about "How do I change my Racor filter?" or "What are the potential issues with the Caterpillar powered 450EB I'm looking at?"

I do this basically to help other Sea Ray owners enjoy their boats and stay active in boating when I'm away from the coast. But, answering the same questions over and over wastes a lot of time that I'm donating in the first place. I don't think asking folks to try searching for the answer before posting a question is unreasonable.
 
Here's my take:

I don't mind doing research for a regular member because some are more skilled at searching than others or have better memories of past topics.

I get irritated when you get someone who pops in, registers only to ask 1 question about a topic that is covered almost daily and never logs back in or posts again.

Yes, I agree no sense in being rude right back. Granted if someone is persistant at it then fine, whack 'em. But the newbies often need a little help searching and getting feel for the flow of things.

Then why not just get them the link and start them on their way? Takes about as much time as typing, "Go search idiot".

There are a couple of things that bug me about this site's usability:
  1. The initial post, should be updated with the final instructions, comments, etc. to the subject matter. Clear and concise. I don't see anyone doing that in this site. Without it, you have to read way too much stuff to get to the answer. Granted it doesn't always apply (holding tank for one), but it makes it easy to find the facts, a solution and get on your way without all the sifting and filtering. Especially on threads that take on another life. Granted this is a behavioral issue.
  2. The site search stinks, plain and simple. Any Keyword in my list only, give me break. When researching something a bit deeper I find it far easier to use google to search this site. e.g.: in the google search box type <site:clubsearay.com > then your keywords or phrases. Granted, google is only as current as their last scan of the site, but historical stuff more than a few days old is typically always there.
 
I personally like when users include links to previous threads in thier reply. If I ask a question and get 3 replys of "No" then I know the answer is "no". However if a trusted user says "no, but here is a link". Then I'll know "why not".

That's what i usually try to do, if it's a newbie, and I remember seeing that topic, so I know what to search for.

What other site provide owners of Sea Ray boats with a wealth of information and valuable tips and trouble shooting tools FOR FREE? So what is wrong with doing a little leg work yourself, and searching out a topic first? I mean even a Google search on a topic can put you right on track to the correct topic on CSR. Have we come to a point where we can’t (won’t) do a little ground work on our own?

Yeah, I guess it doesn't matter. But, I think I'm less apt to do it for someone that's been here for a while.

So if a guy didn't search or did and came up short, so what if there are repeat threads. If we all didnt repeat then after a while there would be nothing to post.

We tell you to look it up cause I know I get tired of repeatly answering the question over and over and over and over and over and over. Usually I'll atleast search for it and post a link and tell the person "See you just had to look it up!"
 
I'm with Frank W. It sometimes takes a long time to answer a question correctly and 9 times out of 10 it's been answered in a previous post. Before a member does a knee jerk of I have this immediate problem do a little searching.
When I first joined the site I looked all through it and found quite a few answers to questions I had without posting question 1. My take on it.
