Another Rescue for the USCG of a Bayliner Owner

I don't think this really has anything to do with him being a bayliner owner. It's more of an owner who isn't that smart. Bayliner, Searay, Formula, etc.. whatever kind of boat it was the outcome would mostly be the same.

The boat was taking on water all night and he is rescued 10 minutes before it sinks? Now that's amazing! Thank goodness for the other boater that kept relaying the message to the CG.

That's because his portable genny was still running and sounded the high water alarm!

I'm amazed at how people ignore a weather forecast.

And it's not just weather forecasts they ignore either! Basic safety gear for running off-shore they frequently ignore in FL too. Our son is a C130 pilot in the USCG and the things these guys come across is amazing. Just because we have sunshine most of the time it's not okay to go miles off-shore (even with single engine boats) without an EPIRB and even basic safety gear, you life may depend upon it. The weather can change very quickly. A few months ago two famous sport folk and a friend went miles off-shore fishing in a smaller boat with no real safety gear only life-jackets, which I think they could not put on in time before their boat capsized. They were out there for days before the boat was found with only one guy left sitting ontop of the upturned hull. Perhaps hearing all this stuff is why my husband and I are only "fair weather sailors", but at least we live to boat another day:)

That was actually 4 football players (2 NFLer's and 2 college) who set out off shore to grouper fish. The forecast was bad and they were in a 21' Edgewater (I belive). The boat's freeboard is very low to the water and shouldntt have been out there. The anchor got stuck and instead of cutting the line they decided to tie the line to the stern and proceeded to floor it thus capsizing their own boat. This happedn a coupld of years ago. Tragic story but they did alott of things wrong to cause thier demise.

Gosh was that really two years ago, how how time flies. Had forgotten that there were four not three aboard. I do remember now that they basically overturned the boat because the anchor was stuck and the way they tried to get it out. All very tragic:(

I agree, all for a maybe $300 anchor, chain and rope. C'Mon, these were two NFL players were talking about. Cut the rope, beat the bad weather in and live another day. Sometimes the "rich" aren't too smart!

If you have not read the book, it is worth the read. Tragic on so many levels. MM

We were out in the same area fishing that day and probably passed these guys as we came in. Can't say for sure because they weren't the only ones ignoring the weather that day. The seas were nearly 2' to 4' when they set out and the weather and winds went absolutely crazy for the next 48 hours. Combine their mistake with the seas washing over the transom and the results are obvious.

I just left an anchor on the wreck they were likely fishing about 2 weeks ago. I recalled their tragedy as I went forward to cut the anchor rode.

In bad times I do. :smt001
