Friends,

My beloved 2003 320 Sundancer "Lucky Dog" was totaled when it floated off the blocks, landed in the water, and sank.
I am moving on and will close on a 2005 390 Sundancer end of March pending a successful sea trial. The boat will be brought back from Boston to NJ as soon as possible by my son and I.
I have been as far as Martha's Vinyard with the 320 so I am not intimidated by the trip, but I will take all possible precautions.

The boat is a documented vessel and I plan to keep it so but I will have to expidite the paperwork so as to be able to bring it back to NJ ASAP after closing. I am also looking for suitable layover spots
and places to fuel up on the way back this early in the season.
The boat is amazing with every option available, but it does have gas engines (8.1sHO's) so the range will not be great.
I am looking for advice on the paperwork as well as suggested ways to break up the trip. I figure two nights stay over.

Best regards and hope to see you out there this season.
Of course she will be called the Lucky Dog II.
I tried to post a picture and hope it shows.

Fred

At a minimum, Montauk [2 or 3 locations] and Liberty Landing are open with fuel.
I'm sure others will chime in with additional avail abilities.

Best of Luck with the new boat.
Ron

Well the question is where is your ultimate destination? Then that will help determin your route, either Long Island sound and out the Veranzano bridge, or around Montauk and straight shot to the Jersey shore...

Fred- Congtrats on the new Lucky Dog II. We also went from a 320 to a 390. You will undoubtedly enjoy the upgrade. The 390 is a fine vessel.

Fred, you are welcome to use my slip in Stratford, CT for layover. restaurant and fuel next door.

I will going to Manasquan Inlet and from there Barnegat Inlet. I want to avoid the ICW.
Thanks,
Fred

Fred,

Congrats on the new boat. I would echo Ron's suggestion as MYC (fuel is usually cheaper at Star Island Marina, as well as the slips, but MYC is great place to stay) and LLM seem to be very logical ports during the delivery trip. From LLM to home you won't need more fuel stops, but if you wish, I'm sure as soon as you jump in to Manasquan Inlet you'll see few marinas with fuel.

I'm sure you've heard, but as of latest updated I've seen, ICW from PP Canal is closed at least to Toms River bridge.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks Alex. My final destination will be Lighthouse Point Marina.

Sorry to hear about your loss, but it sounds like you have upgraded quiet nicely. Congrats and enjoy.

Thanks Alex. My final destination will be Lighthouse Point Marina.

You couldn't be any closer, that's my home port. :smt001

My advice is, especially since you're doing the run early in the season, pass Manasquan Inlet and go all the way to Barnegat Inlet and then back north to Tome River. You'll be loosing about 30NM, but you'll most likely save thousands by avoiding the risky run from PP Canal to Toms River. Also, until there's an official notice for mariners that the Northern part of ICW is open whatever happens there your insurance will have the right not covering you. I'm planning a trip Northeast at the end of May and I'll be heading out via Barnegat Inlet as well. I'm not taking any chances unless I hear several reports that the ICW has been restored and safe to navigate.

I'm easy to spot, as you enter the marina's fairway I'll be "sticking out" on your stbd side right after you pass the pool house.

The Army Core has cleaned the main chanel in bay just dont go along Bayhead go around back side and you will be all right the bay has been open since Dec 15.

Vandal, you're suggesting going btwn Herring Island and the Metedeconk River?

Fred, first off sorry and congrats, second, I purchased this boat in Boston last March at Russo's. I paid a captain to bring her to Newport where I dropped off my rental car. The boat has 8.1's also. She was full 300 gals in Boston they stopped for $800 of fuel to get to Newport , I then put in around $600 I believe to top her off( goat island) in Newport was ridiculous for gas prices. I rounded Montauk and ducked into Shinnecock inlet to catch a break and re-fuel (just in case) there's a gas dock right inside the inlet on your port side. We where in 5'-6' ers and needed a break. That fuel took me to FI inlet and has 1/4 tank left. All in all about $1800 to get to FI inlet I just don't know where the captain stopped for fuel after Boston. It took him 6 hrs to reach Newport .although my boat cruises low 20's if not 18-19 in snot. Best of luck on your trip home. It was a cool thing to do for us .

I believe there is fuel at the eastern end of the Cape Cod canal. I understand it is open year
round. From there Newport is in range.

Fred,

If you're not in favor of making minor detour to Montauk and looking to stay close to CT shoreline, then you have number of options. One of them is Noank shipyard. I've used it myself and it's conveniently located for quick in and out fuel stop. I'm sure that price will be much better than in Newport and I assume your boat has the range to get there from Boston.

Thanks Alex.
Since the weather will be an unknown it is good to have options. Have you been to Fairhaven?
I'm also familiar with Saybrook and have been to Star Island Marina.
I may prefer to travel the LI side of the sound. I think there are less lobster pots to avoid, but I can go either way.
I will definitly stop at Liberty Landing for fuel before the final leg of the trip.
We will be in slip B16 this summer.

Fred,

I have not been in Fairhaven. When cruising the LIS (West to East or returning) I plot a straight course to my destination and quite often end up going in the mid point (not favoring any side, LI or CT) of the LIS for miles and miles. The situation with lobster pots in the mid of the sound is not too bad at all.

Just by glancing at the chart it makes sense to plot a straight course from Buzzards Bay to MYC with minor detour around Block. From MYC I would go toward Gardiners Bay via Plum Gut and jump back in to LIS heading West to Jersey City (LLM).
