I have had a Good anchor windlass for a long time and I always wish it would take up chain in addition to rope. I finally bought a Lewmar V700 that would take up the rope and chain and am presently working on the install. I thought about just a plate over the old holes but on close inspection, the bow pulpit is coming apart. The laminated pieces of the teak are splitting apart. I would have to take it apart and glue it back together.
So, I am trying a different approach. I like the looks of the Baltic birch plywood so I bought a 5 x 5 foot section, Cut 2 pieces and glued them together to get a piece one and one half inch thick. Cut, drilled, sanded to the proper shape and drilled holes.
I like the looks of the wood but I knew this thing would have a lot of scrapes and dings so I decided to protect it with fiberglass. I used 2 inch fiberglass tape on the edges and a layer of glass on the top and bottom. I painted the bottom with off- white single part urethane and installed on the boat. Filled the bolt holes with resin filler and painted the top with the urethane.

I though the electrical would be easy by reusing the Good relays and wiring. The Good motor however has an extra winding for reverse, so I had to replace the Good relays with the Lewmar unit that came with the winch. The instructions also stated not to install the relay in the anchor locker so an extra box mounted on the outside of the anchor locker bulkhead was used. I added an outlet for my fan in the box also. The old up-down switch from the dash and buttons on the forward deck were reused. The breaker from the rear of the boat was also reused.
The winch was installed and wired in. The cleat was bolted on. I tested the winch going both up and down but still need to install the rope and chain. As soon as it warms up a bit, a trip to the lake is planned.

Looks good. I see what you mean about the box in the cabin. Just curious, what was the condition of the deck coring where the old windlass was mounted, was it solid or had it absorbed a lot of moisture? I ask because I'm going to be installing a winch on my 300 DA that currently does not have one and I'm wondering how the decks on these older boats held up over time. I don't want to have to do too much deck work.

Nothing personal.....but you ain't pulpitted til you Bayliner pulpitted!!!!! :wow::huh::grin:

Or is that "POOLpitted.

Other than that, great job on your SR.

It was solid fiberglass where the winch was and is. Farther forward was plywood backing but it appears to have remained dry. After the new holes were cut, I sealed up the wood with resin and some caulking. I am finding in trying to feed the new rope into the anchor locker that it hangs up on the caulking and jams the winch. I noticed there is a sleeve supplied with the winch. I did not find any mention in the instructions about what to do with it but it looks like it should be mounted below the winch as a feed thru for the rope. The hole i have is a little bigger than the sleeve and of course it falls right through. I found some PVC pipe that I have cut and shaped and it may be able to attach below the winch as a feed through.

Hey dp, whats that diving board doing on the front of your boat?

Not mine but in my marina. It started as a 25x8 Bayliner. She's now roughly a 32x12 Bayliner custom. How you ask...... Well...The diving board. Gotta admit, that was a first for me.

Then there is the addition of roughly 2 feet of beam on each side courtesy of some 3/4" plywood.....

And a rather "unique" swim platform. I think it cam off a Navy Seal RIB......

And as Sheldon would say......BAZINGA!!!!!

Not real pretty, but inventive and practical:smt021

I have a friend who does crazy stuff like that to all kinds of things. He re-purposes stuff at his shop in a way that not many would ever think. His stuff rarely looks pretty but it makes sense to him. It often drives his wife nuts and she usually won't let any of his contraptions anywhere near the house..
I tell him that he is one crazy idea away from becoming a very rich guy.

That bayliner is missing a honda genny to power the air conditioner.
