My generator now has approx. 1900 hours on it and it has been very reliable. Towards the end of last boating season I noticed it began to hunt and I put off diagnosing it until this Spring. Well, I haven't had much luck finding the culprit. I am usually good about exercising the motors during this off season except for this year. So, I've been throwing parts at it for the last couple of months to no avail. I have changed oil/filter, impeller, spark plugs (twice), fuel filter, rebuilt carb and then replaced carb with a new one. I can get the unit to start only by manually adjusting the governor and once it starts it runs very rough (hunting) and the exhaust is milky and smells of gas. It will remain running until I kill it and will carry a load.

I know it's getting gas as it runs and have verified fuel flow by removing the fuel line but could the fuel pump be going out and not producing the correct I'm getting broke throwing parts at it without a proper diagnosis.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

Dog - I lost the fuel pump on my 340's 5.0 Kohler, and it wouldn't run at all...take the fuel line off at the carb, put a rubber hose extension on it and run it to a jar. Power the fuel pump and see how the flow is...Mine was "0" - dead fuel pump. Yours obviously is not 1000% dead, but if the flow is good, you can eliminate that from your list.

I've removed the line to the carb and fuel is being pumped but have not checked the psi which is between 2.0-3.5, I guess I need to measure that somehow to rule out.
