I just got done taking off my old anodes and getting ready to put on my old set,I cleaned off the crudy stuff and used a scotch bright pad to help get it clean. I got it looking decent and it looks like its all painted? I know we kinda touched on this subject in one of my old post but I couldnt find it.
But I thought that it had to be bare metal against the anode,or does it make most of its contact through the bolt that holds it on? Let me know what I should do or check before I bolt them down,Thanks.

I just cleaned off all of the crud from mine with my 4" disk grinder. It made short work of it and we are down to bare metal and good to go.:thumbsup:

Ok,got them all on. I just got areas to bare metal, like mainly where it gets bolted down, and a random area here and there all around,Sound good?

I'm not sure what your asking, if you are asking should the drive paint be removed to make good contact with the anode, no. Should the crud on the anode be removed to expose fresh magnesium (fresh water), yes. The "contact" is made through the fasteners. wire brush them up good before reistalling them, or if you are using the merc kits, they come with new fasteners.
Good luck

I have always replaced them. Is it a safe practice to just remove the corrosion on them and then reuse the next season?

This is really bothering me, I just have to ask. Does "Profit of Doom" mean that you are into doom for profit or does it just mean that you don't know how to spell Prophet? Either way, it doesn't sound good. Just Curious.

I always just replaced them every year, IMO, the corrosion issues on the BIII's were just to great to fool around with, however, Merc says that you can just clean them up as long as there is 1/2 to 2/3 of them left.

I was talking about bare metal on the drive where the anode meets,I just wire brushed a small area where the bolt holes were on the drive, now I see you guys mean only the anode had to be clean,Its should be ok that I did that, there only small areas?
As for the profitofdoom thing,,,It means nothing. I made this name long ago for a video game name tag for when I use to play online long ago in the mid 90's. I can spell prophet but just thought it was more fun and zany to be ProfitOfDoom ,,ProphetOfDoom is just to formal and people would think im a bible toting nut.
Now your probably thinking,ok I get that but why now here on a boat forum......Well when I first got into the wonderful world of the internet and discovered forums and other sites that you had to sign up with a user name,I would make a different name everywhere I went that fit category of the site/forum and time went on and before you knew it I would belong to a bunch of places and couldnt remember my name at some. So I fixed that by just becoming ProfitOfDoom everywhere I go. Its easy to remember for me,and the screen name is almost always available so I dont need to add silly numbers to the end of a popular name,Its a win win situation :)
