The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported that Lazaro Mendez, known as DJ Laz, was operating the 40-foot boat in Key Biscayne on Sunday.

Several people were helping to push the boat off a sandbar when one of the engines caught the body of 23-year-old Ernesto Hernandez. He later died at a nearby hospital.
Investigators are trying to determine how the accident happened and will look into whether alcohol played a role.
Mendez posted a statement on his Facebook page on Monday. He wrote he was "incredibly distraught over the unfortunate accident." He also said he has and "will continue to cooperate fully with investigators during this tragic time."

How sad. And he was just tryin' to help. My first thoughts were that if the xx hundred horsepower engines couldn't move the boat then why would the captain allow a mere mortal to try pushing it? Kedge or C-tow would be protocol in a situation like that I would think. Must've been awful for everyone involved. A few years back a Christian group had a getaway at one of our lakeside resorts. One of the parents accidentally backed a rented ski boat over his 10 year old daughter in an effort to retrieve her after a ski. I wasn't there but I still cringe when I think of this poor family. Prop gaurds would save a lot of grief, but I understand they have a profound effect on torque. Just gotta be careful and know your procedures I guess.
