Hi there,
What type or size anchor should I be using???? Just trying to anchor in a big lake that always seems to be choppy,,,,Thanks..

Read THIS

This is the most common anchor.

What type of bottom are you anchoring in?

When you guys are near other boats (like watching the fireworks) and there is no current, and very little wind, and you don't have enough room to let the anchor out, how to you guys keep your boat from moving around? Do you use a different anchor for just these situations? Just another question added to the thread.

Get a copy of Chapman Piloting. There's an entire chapter on anchoring.

Every boater needs a copy of this, or another equally comprehensive book, and to be familiar with the information therein.

We keep two anchors on our boat - 13# and 8# - both danforth style. Both have 200' of rode. The 13# has 1/2" and the 8# has 3/8". We usualluy anchor in areas that have sand or mud bottoms. Never had a problem with with them coming loose.

When we anchor at a beach on Lake Erie we usually encounter a constant chop. For this situation we use the larger anchor off the bow. Very lttle side to side movement.

When we are at a beach at an inland lake with flat water and a slight breeze we will use both. Large anchor off the bow and the small one off the stern (towards shore). This set up holds us securely in place.

Check out the Digger Anchor at BPS or Cabela's. I absolutely love mine. I have used with my Sea Ray and a 24 foot CC. Hasn't failed yet.

8# danforth for us, with 4' of heavy chain, and a 1.5# weight where chain turns to rope to help lay it down.

We dont need anymore than that on our lake, and if we are in close proximity to other boats, its probably best to just raft up share the beer anyway.

I have a Danforth I use off the starboard side stern along with a 12lb mushroom anchor off the port side. If I need to be very stable, Ill throw a third off the bow, another Mushroom since I got three of them with the boat.

Hey, has anyone ever used a trip line on the anchor? We keep loosing our anchors in the muck and trees and I've read a trip line would help us with that problem.

Read the book Frank suggests so you also understand how they work. I know that may sound funny, but a danforth without the proper chain, scope and rode, will be nearly useless.

I had an 13LB Danforth on my 230OV but I didn't have enough chain. It worked fine for an afternoon or calm area, but I knew I didn't have enough chain so I would have never slept overnight with it like that.
I did realize also that an achor can save your a*s if equipment failures arise and you're drifting. I'll have enough chain on the new anchor for Sleeping over and emergencies in rough weather.

Best of Luck

:smt001 I made that mistake. No chain, just the rope it came with waving mockingly in the water.

I carry a variety on my 240SD.

Main is a 13# Hooker type with 6' of chain and 200' of rode.
Smaller #7 Utility with 200' of rode.
12# River Anchor with 100' of rode
10# Mushroom Anchor with 100' of rode.

If I don't want to swing I'll use the main plus one or two out the stern as needed.

Big ditto on

i have a danforth and a Good Windlass - great windlass but does not take chain. so i special ordered 2' of 9/16" galvanized chain and cut off 4 links, which gave me the precise amount of the heavy chain to reach from where the line disappears into the windlass to the end of the anchor shaft. certainly helps keep things set, although in this pic i hadnt gotten the chain yet and had no problem on this windy and rough day...
(note the plethora of scope!)
