Anchor Hatch Reinforcement for Mounting Windlass

Well, finally bit the bullet and purchased a windlass. I boat a lot by myself so easy deployment, especially in close quarters and windy conditions, is crucial for me. I bought a free-fall unit and the way my anchor roller is designed it should launch perfectly.

I'm thinking of mounting on the locker door after reinforcing it in some way. OR, replacing anchor door with some sort of starboard or other material that will hold the windlass secure when retrieving.

Does anyone have any pics of similar install? I searched the site forever and couldn't find anything. I don't think there's enough room to mount and the back edge of the bowspirit and worried about rope/chain drop below deck. I figure the anchor hatch area is the only way to go.

I dont know about mounting it on the locker door. You are going to be relying on that cheap piano hinge on the locker door to hold your boat. I mounted a Lewmar above deck model on my 268. I mounted it as far back on the pulpit as I could. If you get that hook stuck, that locker door is comming right off. Just sayin.

That's what I'm worried about. I've read about some owners backing the hatch with wood or seaboard as well as replacing the entire door and securing permanently. Just trying to figure out how to do it. I think my dock neighbor just completed something similar on his Rinker. This is where that Engineering degree would have paid off

Coral, we put mine on a hatch door that was screwed into the deck. Check out my thread and photos including a below deck shot. It is called 90's 270 windlass retrofit II. Not near computer on phone can't paste link. MM

As long as you re-enforce the the door and secure it more than with just the hinges I can't imagine you would have a problem at all.
