Looking for tips on how to troubleshoot my analog tach.
Boat is a 99 270 - guages are original. Boat was re-powered in 05 with a 6.2 mpi that has smartcraft.
I have a northstar GPS hooked up that gets smartcraft engine info so I have an accurate smartcraft tach reading from there.
But the analog tach just kind of bounces around all over the map like its floating. I have removed and retightened the wires on the back and that hasn't really made a difference. Before I go out and buy a new tach - just a couple questions I was hoping to try and square away on my own:
1) Would an analog tach from 99 not be compatible with an analog feed from a 05 engine? All the same right?
2) Is there a way, short of having a spare tach lying around, to see if the problem is at the engine side?
3) if I just disconnect the tach altogether - is there an alarm or something that I'm going to have to be worried about? Occasionally when the current tach is really spinning out of control I get a mystery beep from under the dash.
Thanks!
