I have spent the last three weeks getting my boat ready to haul from south Georgia to Rend Lake in Southern Illinois where I plan to spend 4-6 weeks. Boat looks great and running strong on the muffs so I decide I need to put it in the Flint river for a final run through. I topped off my oil reservoir closed the hatch an went to the river. Boat ran perfect and we had a great day. When I wnt to start loading the boat for the trip to Ill. I opened the ski box and there was an oil slick in side. Wehe I opened the hatch I noticed right away that I did not put the cap back on an the oil reservior and it was almost empty. The boat never ran hot I always keep a close eye on my guages so I know that is not a problem. My question is: could this have damaged any thing or could there be related problems down the line. Funny thing is, the cap was on top of the motor right where I left it even after a whole day of tubing and running the river.

I had a I/O 4.3 in my last SeaRay that sprung a leak in the oil filter about the size of a pea. The oil all came out almost instantly. I noticed a change in motor sound before any alarms went off. Most if not all of the oil had leaked out by that time. All we did was fill it back up with a new filter(after being towed in) and it never gave us any sign that it had damage. I do know that if I chose to just ride out the noise, I would be $4,000.00 less in the bank. It all depends on how long it was without oil.

Good luck.

How much oil did it take to top off after running. The oil that came out should not have been very much. If your guages were in the green through out and you did not hear any unusual noises then count yourself lucky and go boating. Most engines will let you know when they are hurt before giving up. 2 noises the you may hear if the engine is hurt. 1. is lifter chatter (sounds like a sewing machine) and 2. is rod knock (sounds like a hammer hitting the inside of the engine down low).

If you want to put youself at ease.. get some of the oil that is left in the crankcase and send it off to be checked. They will be able to tell you if you have excees amounts of metal in your oil.

I assume also that you are talking the gear oil reservior, if so, sounds as though you never got a low oil alarm from the sensor that is in the bottom of the reservior. Were it I, I would take a peek at the vent plug in the drive and make sure it's still full, if so add oil to the bottle and go have fun in Illinios.

you mean, clean up mess and go have fun!

Thanks guys. I had it serviced about 2/3 of the way through last season has about 30 hrs. on it so I am just going to drain it and start over. How many quarts of gear lube does a bravo 3 take? I have read that the best thing to use is an injector that screws to the bottom hole any recommendations on which ones work best. I would like to use a gallon jug rather than quarts. Thanks for all the help.

Brad,

In your OP you said that your reservoir was "almost" empty. If it still had any gear oil in it, then most likely the hose attaching it to your drive is still full of oil at this point. The reservoir is located at the top of your engine as it gravity feeds oil down to the drive as needed. As others have said - remove your vent plug (higher of the two plugs) located on the side of your drive. If any fluid drips out, then you are good to go. Just add oil to the fill line on the reservoir.
