I have had my 320 DA for about 5 months now and I love the boat. My problem is I missed out on a 2000 340DA and ended up with my 320 which is 2 years newer and a cleaner boat. Now the crazy part...

If I had a chance to but a 2003 340DA with 8.1's, would I be absolutely nuts to think about trying to sell my 320 and move up to the 340 if I could get it for between $75K and $85K? I still have a few small things I want to do with my boat but the difference between the 2 boats is substantial. I just paid for all of the survey, bottom paint, and a few other things and would have to do the same with the 340 but at least it already has radar & seems ready to go.

Am I crazy in thinking about this already?

Some folks can put off 2 foot itis for many years. Some can't and succumb to the urge and I've seen folks buy and sell 3 boats in one year! Crazy, but it's only money!! If you can get top dollar for yours, why not? I'd list your current boat and see what kind of interest you get. If you get some interest and can sell it fast, go for it!

Need more room? Longer range?

Need? no....want? yes

One thing is we will spend a lot of nights on the boat. I am 6'-3" and about 225lbs (of solid muscle?) and the berth on the 340 is a bit larger and those 8.1's are sooooo nice.

Ken, You've got the sickness really bad.
If you can sell high and buy low ??. GO FOR IT !!!. :smt038

Ken.....no matter what they say..size does make a difference. I have a 340 DA and totally happen with it. But, I want a 400, go figure. At the end of the day, no matter what size of boat you have...you want a larger one. I always say, if you can afford it and it makes you happy, why not. Good luck. R

It's always fun to dream..I sure wouldn't want to be a two boat owner.:smt021 I agree with Sundancer.....

You are in the rationalization stage. It will not pass until the purchase is complete.

Personally, I would hang on to what you have and wait to move to something even bigger. I don't know that there is all that much difference in size to make it worth it.
I'd rather hold out for something with a seperate shower stall, and a forward stateroom with a door. I think that would be a nice move up that you would really notice a difference in.

I found a 57 footer that would be perfect! It needs the engines (diesels) rebuilt but what a beauty!

I feel for you. By the time I reached my 12th month of boating, I was into my third boat. The first one (28') was an introduction to boating - I didn't know what I wanted and if my family would like boating. With the passion validated, we decided to move up. My only mistake was moving to the 32 footer when I wanted the 35 footer. I talked myself down for financial reasons. The move to the 32 footer didn't give me a whole lot more than the 28 footer, whereas the 35 footer had a substantially better layout for our needs. By month 12, we upgraded again. We were then in the right boat for us, and kept it for three years, until the kids grew to the point where we needed larger.

You're clearly passionate about boating. If makes you happy and doesn't hurt financially, I'd say go for it!

I love spending other people's money...

The Admiral says I can have the 57 footer! The only problem is I have to sell our house... I need to straighten her out. What would it cost to replace a couple of CAT 3306's, maybe with 3406's? No big deal... I figure about $40K or so, maybe double?

With that boat I could have a sweet tender to boogie around in!

The size of the v berth was definitely an issue for us on the 320 we had. Way to small, my feet would hang off the bed and it did keep us away from spending nights. Also had the chance to sea trial a 340 and those motors are sweet. I felt our 320 was underpowered with the 350 mag. So if you dont need more than the 340 i would say go for it.

Ooooh, but I went on a local 2005 420 DA with a blue hull and a gazillion dollars in upgrades a few weeks ago, maybe that's the best size? No really, I am seriously considering the 340DA...I need to keep up with Scott! I think I might just swing by to see it tomorrow while the Admiral is in San Diego.

If you can do it financially, why not ?

I went from a 270 DA to a 310 DA to a 370 DA in 3 years. But if you are ready to do a move like this maybe you should also have a look at something bigger like a 380 for example. It could save you a next move in a year or two.

PS: I think we are all crazy to spend all these $$$ in boats, but it feels so good ....

After going through three boats in five years, I found something that stopped me from looking at bigger boats.. an airplane. Problem is, now it's been a few years and that thing is feeling a bit cramped.. and slow.. There really is no cure. :smt089

An '03 340 for 85k? Yes, do it. Even at 75k it will help offset any loss you may have on the 320.

That said, I agree with JVM225, my next upgrade will include a separate shower stall.

Ah but the 320 only cost me $50K plus a few grand in upgrades so far...no loss possible (I don't think)
