going to post here but may be better in the general section.

anyway, my boat is now 31 years old and has the original alternator. Mando AR-150 (Mercruiser #98555). a friend replaced his on his 1989 300DA with a DB Electrical ADR0334 1 wire for about $60. he also replaced the one on his 1984 Wellcraft with the same part number. this is a 110 amp alternator. mine is 55 amp. i called a local alternator shop and they gave me a ballpark of $50-60 to rebuild mine. The direct DB replacement for mine should be AMN0002.

has anyone replaced their alternators with a higher amp one? any issues or concerns? or should i just have mine gone through by the local shop? any benefit to the higher amp alternator? we normally only have the bilge blower running at low speeds and the VHF on at all times when under way. not much else e12V that runs while we are out. we don't even leave the radio/CD player on when out so not much draw when running. oh, sometimes we forget to turn the fridge off so that will run on 12V while we are out at times but we try to remember to turn it off when we unhook from shore power

IMHO...If you don't need the extra amps keep your original configuration and have yours rebuilt.

My alt quit on me last year so I replaced it with a slightly higher amp alt, my first time out running it after being out all night on anchor I could smell electrical burning :( I have 3 batteries one for engine start and 2 for house. When I left my switch on ALL as I usually did my new higher amp alt was burning up the + charge wire from the alt to the starter + post. It was a smaller #8 or so gauge wire. I replaced it with a standard battery to starter wire #02 gauge or what ever they are and now it works ok.

I upgraded to new alternators when I repowered as the new harnesses were set up for the newer style, good improvement.

I am not a fan of rebuilding starters and alternators……UNLESS, you can verify the source of the parts used in the rebuilding process. The wholes supply chain for the rebuilders is loaded with cheap imported parts. A rebuilder using US sources is much more likely to return alternator that will last a reasonable about of time.

The other issue is that a new replacement from a good company like Prestolite/Leece-Neville, Delco, etc. will have all new parts. A rebuilder may or may not replace only the bad parts when he rebuilds which means you may still have an alternator with 30 year old bearings, diodes, rectifiers, etc.

I would second Frank's comments. I just had all three of mine rebuilt from a local shop who uses US parts. The reason I rebuilt mine?... the new model was cheap looking and made in CHINA, mine clearly say made in USA so I went with the rebuilds. In fairness, the shop I use is a little unique. Attached is a picture.

just to add, when i called the rebuilder and told him it was off a 1986 Sea Ray he seemed confused and said 'Ski Ray?'. i repeated myself and he said, i have no idea. then somebody in the background must have heard him and realized what it was so we will see when i take it up there

hi what did you repower with? i need to repower and am looking for replacements. i have a 1987 300 DA sundancer cruiser. io's 260 hp 350 gm's mercruisers. alpha 1 1st gen

I used two 5.7 litre engines from michiganmotorz.com. they are brand new Vortek motors rated at 315 hp each. I got the gold packages, added new starters, alternators and couplers as well as fresh water cooling kits. Very pleased with the upgrades, boat likes the extra horsepower.
