alternator, solenoid doofus!

when it says, "running engine with solenoid off WILL damage alternator" what is the damage they're referring to? don't ask why I'm asking
 
and just where does it say this? sounds like a misprint.

on both panels just below the solenoid switches, not a misprint, ran it without the starboard solenoid on for about an hour, realized this back at the slip, i'll check the charging system out tomorrow...
 
Alternators should not be run without battery connected, basically can damage the alternator

Well I haven't done it but, I understand if the alternator is charging (motor running) and not connected to a battery it will blow the charging diodes.
Or, some how fry itself internally and becomes a fancy paper weight.
Good new is a new alternator isn't all that costly.

Some of our more savvy electrical experts might explain it correctly.
