I recently purchased a 1998 Searay 290 W/ twin 350 and Alpha One gen 2 drives. I’m sadly pulling port engine so I can get 4E Kohler generator pulled to have it overhauled. While sizing up this job I noticed the transom assembly looks pretty rough so I figured it was the perfect time to replace. Now to the question… are all Alpha One Gen 2 transom assemblies interchangeable??? I’d love to be able to save a few bucks and pick one up on Marketplace place and rebuild it. I’m not terribly disappointed about removing port engine since it appears to be a bit weak based on the sync gauge on dash and I see rust all over manifolds/Risers so I’ll likely take this opportunity to strip down and send heads out and see how the rest of it looks.

Alpha 1 gen 2 transom assemblies are all the same. The alpha 1 gen 1 does not have the remote oil reservoir. I replaced both assemblies and drives on my 290 in Oct of 21 for about 10k in parts. Wasn't a bad project at all. I had my local marina pull both engines after I disconnected everything. Working evenings after work it was about a week start to finish.

My 1992 doesn't have the remote oil reservoirs. Both of my drives are Alpha 1 Gen 2.

Unless you have the lines plugged from the transom assembly you might have a1 gen 1. Do you have a plug on the top of your drive or 1 on the side of the upper and lower unit. A quick google search will show you the difference between a1 gen 2 and a1 gen 1. The a1 gen 2 transom assemblies have the remote oil line fitting attached. The a1 gen 2 drives have the oil fitting on the upper unit and will not bolt to a a1 gen1 transom assembly.

Nope. Not a Gen 1. As per my manuals, survey and delivery build sheets. Only some were equipped with the Drive Unit Gear Lube Monitor. My drives have the drain in the lower, the vent/fill in the upper and the dip stick on the upper top. And no lube monitor bottle or line attachment point drilled into the drives.

I had a 1993 gen two 3.0l set up exactly as you describe. Dip stick on the upper and without a gear lube bottle. Gen two lower unit.
