Hi guys, I want to tighten (or at least check torque) on the cinch bolts that hold the steering pin in place. I know this is a wear item if not serviced, my question is where exactly are those nuts to torque? Are they the two on the outside of the boat on the gimbal ring, or on the inside of the transom?

I was able to find torque specs of 50ft/lbs but unable to find the location of the bolts in the service manual I have. The PDF of the manual isn't searchable, so it is a pain to find stuff

Thanks

They are accessible from the outside, you have to turn the drive to access the nut on the back side. I've checked mine a few time, have never been loose. Here is a good picture, see the two bolts at the top of the gimbal ring? There is a nut on the back side on mine, some have a U bolt. If it is a U bolt, be careful not to stretch the bolt by over tightening. I always back the bolt off a little, then re-torque it.

Gotcha, looks like a PITA if the bell housings are still on (which mine is) but I'll give a look this weekend. Thanks again

50 lbs. sounds high, you should double check that, mines a 3/8" u bolt. Stainless isn't that strong, and you don't want to break it., it would be quite an effort to replace it.

Leave them alone, I was told by a mechanic never touch them.
