How can you tell if the carrier bearing in the lower unit is no good?

if you mean the prop shaft one:
growls or rough when turned
grinding, vibrating
seals leaking
excessive play in the shaft (wobbles)

Maybe you are talking about the gimbal bearing which is the most common bearing noise experienced on I/O engines. This bearing is located on the drive shaft where it enters the hull and sounds like constant growl. The only way to tell for sure is pull the whole outdrive and reach in there to feel or spin the bearing. It's large enough to stick two finger in so you can rotate back and forth. It should have no roughness.

Gimbal, u joints are all brand new. Alignment is perfect. Prop (stainless) was sent out to be checked and returned balanced. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor.

I’ve been chasing a vibration for 2 seasons now. It’s between 1200 and 1800 rpm.

The prop shaft is .002 out of round. Side play in the prop shaft is .008. This is why I am asking about the carrier bearing, not the gimbal.
