Alpha 1 Gen 2 - Ticking sound when turning prop by hand

I have a really light ticking sound when I spin the prop by hand on the trailer. You can feel it through the prop and hear it when you are close up. It's not affected by the trim angle and everything is out of gear.

I gave the same description to the local Merc dealer and he says it might be the gimbal bearing and to run it until the end of the season and then bring it in for an inspection. The drive-off inspection for gimbals/bellows/ujoints is around $165. Of course a bearing replacement would increase that. The gimbal bearing is around $75, plus some labor.

It just seems odd for a 115hr rig to have an issue like this. My buddies 89 IMP is still smooth.:huh:

Any other ideas?

Shift cable probably needs to be adjusted. Have someone slowly ease it into gear (try both fwd and reverse) as you spin the prop. See if the sound/feel intensifies before actually going into gear.

Very odd diagnosis by a mercruiser mechanic because if the drive is out of gear, the gimbal bearing doesn't turn when you spin the prop. I had the same thing on my boat. Your shift cable is out of adjustment.
