Allure Flooring project

I like the idea and the look of the Allure Ultra. I know you are still on the hard but I am wondering about the noise level in the cabin with the carpet gone and this product now in place. Any thoughts on it?

Last weekend I finished up my winter flooring poject on the boat. I installed Allure Ultra vinyl plank flooring down in the cabin. I used a clear cedar color for the main flooring and a dark walnut for the trim areas. My boat is a 1997 330 Sundancer.

Your first pic went away. You could post on photobucket or the like and link to there. I would like to see the total project over time. Others may as well.

My SO and I went to look for wood for Saint Max last week, however we are reconsidering the project material after seeing your Allure install.

Is there any way to post direct links? It doesn't seem like one can view them the way they it is set up without logging in with yahoo credentials. I don't have those. Thanks.

Bryan

Don't know if it can be done or not. I just set up the flicker account to get this far. Sorry

If you send me an email address I can send the pics via your email.

Hello,
Excellent job installing the Allure Ultra flooring!
I am also considering installing the same flooring in my "02 340 Sundancer.
I have a few questions I'm hoping you can answer.
1, What effect does extreme cold have on the flooring? Does the floor show any signs of contracting and cracking? I'm assuming the manufacturer does not warranty their product in that environment. Is this the first winter since the install. Unless you are in heated storage. (I boat in Lake St.Clair).
2, Do you have any estimate on total hours from start to finish?
3, Do you have any more pics on the install? Especially the dark color border on the stairs and outer edges of the floor to the carpet.
4, Did you install directly on the fiberglass floor or did you install a wood sub-floor?
Thanks for your responses!
Glen.

I answered your questions about the flooring project but your inbox is full and wouldn't accept my response at the time. Did you clear it out yet?

Answer on the forum....many are reading this thread and interested.

Here is the response I tried to send to Glen via PM,
The flooring is holding up well. I installed it during the winter months last season while the boat was in heated storage. The floor did not move much at all during the summer that was one of my concerns. Even with the extreme heat inside the cabin when the A/C was turned off there was no buckling or movement. I did allow about a 1/4" gap on all sides just in case there would be expansion. I did most of the work on the planks at home in my workshop. I made a paper template of the cabin floor then transferred it to the flooring that I had layed out on my basement floor. The stair treads and hatch covers were also done at my home. Those pieces were all glued down with contact cement. The actual cabin floor is free floating. I have yet to finish the corner moulding that I am going to put down aroud the base. It is a plastic 1/4 round moulding that can be heated slightly and bent to shape. I will attach that with finish nails when I get around to it. I have no idea how many hours I spent on it but if my boat were closer to my home I would have had it done a lot sooner. The floor is laid directly on the fiberglass floor of the cabin. I did have to level a few spots by sanding to get the floor nice and flat. I too boat Lk. St. Clair and keep the boat moored at Belle Maer Harbor. Will be there again next season.

To add to Warren's response, I put the same stuff down in my dinette and am about to put it in the salon. It does seem a bit more slippery than I expected. With running shoes on I don't stick to it like glue, I can slide my shoe a bit. Other than that, its a great value. Its practically free based on costs of marine stuff.

Warren,

Was the 1/4 round part of the Allure flooring? Do you think there would have been any problem if you had glued it down instead of letting it float?

Bryan

No, the 1/4 round is just a plastic moulding you can buy at Lowe's. I plan on cutting and bending to fit and then painting it a dark brown to match the dark trim I used on the flooring.

What about free floating vs. glued down?

I don't think gluing it down would present any problems. I plan on checking the floor this winter as I am storing the boat outside this season. We'll see if there is any contraction that happens in 30 degree weather.

I would love to hear the results. My wife wants to lose a bunch of carpet from the boat.

Bryan,
Read the entire thread. I go into detail about how I installed it and there are a couple of pics of the finished floor.

Warren,

I did and showed it to her. That is what got her interested this summer. I am subscribed to this thread. Swapping out the carpet is just not at the top of the list. I may get to it late winter or early spring. The boat is getting wrapped this year to help with other projects, such as fixing my sliding door, so I can control the temperature when working on her better. I would prefer to glue the flooring down rather than have it float free. I would only be looking to do one, or just a few, small area on the boat that would be more conducive to being glued.
