Last weekend I finished up my winter flooring poject on the boat. I installed Allure Ultra vinyl plank flooring down in the cabin. I used a clear cedar color for the main flooring and a dark walnut for the trim areas. My boat is a 1997 330 Sundancer.

Looks very nice!

Looks good.... How about some more larger pics?

I'm limited to picture size due to my free subscription to CSR but here's another one from the opposing side.

Looks good
What did you use for trim around the hatch and on the stairs and how did you attach it?

Nice. Details? $$$, UPC of the allure? Edging on steps? Prep work? My carpet is shot and I don't want more carpet.

TIA

Here's the process. After tearing out the carpeting and 3 steps (worst part) I sanded the floor to remove most of the glue residue and a couple of high spots on the fiberglass. I then made a resin paper template of the floor (2 pcs.) then taped them together at the middle. I took the template home then laid out the Allure flooring on my basement floor at home and put the template over it, traced it, then cut the pieces that needed to be cut. I then labled the individual pieces like a puzzle and made a diagram on paper so I could reassemble the flooring at the boat. I made 3 new plywood steps because I had to destroy 2 of them in the removal process. The Allure flooring is free floating per instructions except for the steps and hatch covers. I glued (contact cement) the flooring to those pieces. I used a color called Clear Cherry for the main flooring and Dark Walnut for the trim around the hatches and also the trim on the steps. By the way the template worked great. After assembling the flooring at the boat I only needed to trim 2 pieces to get the proper fit. I'm going to let the floor settle for a month or so then I plan to use plastic PVC quarter round moulding to finish the floor where it meets the carpeting. The moulding can be bent to go around the radiused corners by using a heat gun. The Dark Walnut trim pieces I cut by following the profile of the stair treads making the pieces 2" wide. The trim around the hatch covers I cut on a table saw at 1" wide and 45'd the corners like a picture frame. All of those pieces are glued down as well. Any questions feel free to ask

By the way, the whole project was less than $250. I bought the Allure (3 cherry, 1 dark walnut) at Home Depot.

How difficult was the prep work?
The carpeting came up in pieces due to the glue and 10,000+ staples that they used at the factory. We used a hair dryer to heat the glue as we pulled up the carpeting. Had to go around and pull staples with pliers afterward. The stair treads were more difficult. I had to determine how they were fastened down before trying to remove them because everything was hidden with the carpeting. Turns out they toe screwed them into the side support with extra long screws. I had to destroy 2 of the stair treads due the the heads of the screws twisting off when I tried backing them out. I then had to Dremel the wood around the screw so I could get vise grips on the shank of the screw to get the screws out of the side support. The original treads were made up of 3 pcs. each of plywood sandwiched together. I made the new ones 2 pc. of 3/4" sandwiched together to maintain the original thickness. After removing the carpet I sanded the floor with a 4" orbital sander to remove the glue residue and 3 high spots in the fiberglass so that the new flooring would sit flat. It wasn't an easy job but as you can see it was worth it.

Wellwa,

Can you please assist? I sent you a PM, I started this project awhile ago and having difficulty finishing.

Thanks,
Jim

Is slippery when wet? I've flown down my steps more time than I care to admit.

Don't know yet, boat is still on the hard due to the lovely weather here in Michigan. I purposely bought the Allure Ultra product because it is fully textured just like real wood. It is not a smooth vinyl product.

Has anyone ever thought about using clear grip tape on the stairs. They use it on skateboards for grip and its clear so you can still see the graphics. Just a thought.

Wellswa - Did you use the Gripstrip or Interlocking Allure. I will be putting this product down this weekend - not sure which one i want to use. I plan on using the clear grip tape on the stairs and step under the closet, i can see the steps being a little slick at times. I am converting the cushion between the couch and v-berth into a step/ shelf type area. thanks - Paul

I used the Allure Ultra. It is the interlocking tongue and groove type. I chose that product because it looks and feels like real wood. I don't forsee a problem with it being slippery even if it is a little wet. The grip strip type does not have the coarse grain feel as does the Ultra. The pieces on the steps and floor hatches are glued down with contact cement so they will not move at all. Good luck with your project.
