I was thinking of how to air condition the cockpit when there are 2 or 3 teenagers sleeping overnight with the camper canvas up.(on shore power). I understand the evaporative type doesn't work well in the mid atlantic states. I've seen some portable units around $300. Any ideas ? thanks

I have in the past used a portable AC unit in the cockpit of my 2000 245 Weekender with a camper top and worked very well after sunset even for the cuddly cabin.

My portable unit "carry-on" is 7000 btu's and I can hang meat in the cabin the few times a year I use it. My boat is the wide beam 270 but not quite the same as your 290. Still, I had a 5000 btu unit before this one with the same results. It takes just a few minutes to set up. I use it every year on vacation at Block Island Rhode Island and leave it on all day during some 80-90 degree weather.

I wanted to verify that I used a house portable AC unit. Vented the hot air through a zippered section of the canvas.

Sorry - I missed the point of the "cockpit". I don't think mine is powerful enough to cool that with the door open :). I've seen the home portable ones that vent to a window but don't know how well they really work. Good luck

Sorry what I meant that I placed the home unit behind the helm seat vented the hot air out where the camper canvas was zipped together after the sun went down, the unit cooled the whole boat cockpit area and cuddy.
