Time and place. There's a time and a place for everything. If you love hearing loud cars, the best place to go is somewhere that loud cars are congregating. A racetrack comes to mind. Or a car show/exhibition. Not a residential neighborhood.
Running an open exhaust where people are just hanging out at anchor, or generally recreating, is going to _obviously_ disturb some (if not most) of them. Yeah, some will be admiring, and the rest are just waiting for you to go anywhere else. And before someone jumps in talking about their anchorage that is generally used by people with loud boats, see "Time and Place" above.
This is pretty much exactly the same problem people have with PWCs. PWCs don't generally just "pass on through" anchorages, because they are frequently looking for some nice flat water where they can stunt around, doing circles, whatever. So the people around them get to listen to his little motor going all out for god-knows-how-long.
Sure, it's a blast when YOU are doing it. Sure, some people will enjoy watching the stunts (or hearing the loud exhaust). But for everyone else, it's just a royal PITA.
And the fact that the people doing it just don't seem to (or want to) get that, or don't care, is the main reason it REALLY PO's the rest of us.
