I am moving along on my full interior restoration, it's now time to figure out the TV's. You guys are such a wealth of knowledge! Can't wait to be done with the work on my boat so I can start asking you for cocktail recipes to drink on her...

I am going to install a 29 or 30 inch flat screen in the Salon - I have 27 1/2" in width where I want to install it and probably a 35 to 45 inch tv in the aft cabin that I've converted from twin beds to a Cal King.

I'm looking for your thoughts on what I should get in TV's that I buy - here is what I am thinking:

  1. Prefer something that will run off of 12 volts - I know some of the smaller TV's have adapters that convert 120vac to 12vdc - if it is designed for 12vdc I would think that would be far more efficient than running an inverter to power 120vac while on hook.
  2. It should have a tuner that will allow me to tune in all the over the air channels (analog and digital?)
  3. Ability to run the sound output to my Fusion stereo - earphone bluetooth?

What have you guys done? What do you suggest?

I went one of the smaller TVs that runs on 12v so I didn't have to run the generator or small car-style inverter (which caused a lot of static interference). You'll need a digtal tuner, but that's all you can buy in modern TVs anyway. Your current antenna (if you have one) should still work. I also did the Miccus Bluetooth via earphone jack for sound. Will see if I can find the thread for you, but there are several where I posted it. Hopefully you'll be able to re-use some of the ideas, even if its for a bigger install!

I did exactly what James did. In fact, he talked me through it when I did it. We have a 22" Skyworth-LED-12v with built in DVD player-all works perfect. Also did the Miccus transmitter in the headphone jack and the Miccus receiver in the aux jack on the Clarion CMD4. So far it has all be flawless.

Thanks for the advice! It helps to hear that the Skyworth TV has worked well for you.

In the FWD stateroom, I went with 20" LG / DVD combo that ran off a 12V power brick. I snipped the end, and wired it to the boat. The salon is a 32 LG, with a similar 12V power brick. It didnt make any sense to run the TV off the battery on this one, my KVH receiver requires the genny. Point being though, LG puts out 12V tvs. Picked them up last year at Best Buy.

Hi Paul - do you by chance know which models the LG's were? I've been poking around on Best Buy websites trying to figure out the tv's that have "bricks" that could be cut off.

I took a look at my log book, and did not record the model. However, I'll be back at the boat tomorrow and will post model numbers in the evening.

Welp, my information was off. I have Insignia (not LG) and 32" / 24" (not 20").

Models are: MS-32D311NA15 & NS-24ED310NA15

The 24 does have a built in DVD, where both have external 12V AC converters.
