Need insurance for a new marina and a newly purchased boat in New England..Any advice on a good and affordable insurance company willing to insure a classic?

First, do a search for "Yacht policy" on this site for some really great detailed information on what coverage to have--policies DO differ and a boat policy isn't the same thing as a yacht policy.

Then, shop, shop, shop around, as premiums vary widely between providers, as well as from the same provider but in different regions and lake/river vs. ocean-going. I had a yacht policy with Progressive on my '89 300DA that was over $900....the exact same coverage through BoatUS is just over $500. Thankfully, I haven't had to file a claim, so can't speak to customer service in that regard, but both did agreed-value with me at what I feel is a fair price. BoatUS permits self-survey now, which was not the case when I first got the boat.

Congrats on the new toy--may you have many years of fun together!

NBOA is a sponsor here and the "official insurance company of Sea Ray", or something like that. Check them out. I found there rates to be best.

BoatUS.

What do you mean by 'self survey'?
BoatUS supplied a questionnaire for me to complete--everything from "are the batteries secured to prevent movement in acid proof trays or approved battery boxes?" to "are all hoses connected with double hose clamps?"

(BoatUS hadn't mentioned the professional survey requirement when they gave me a quote; they informed me the day I paid the seller/called to activate a policy, with transport scheduled the next morning, so I had to scramble to find another provider. Progressive insured me with no survey or questionnaire.)

I have a 1988 340 dancer. boat us no survey required. no claims (except for run out of gas delivery for the inflatable).
$ 739.00/year including towing

stated value ( a little more than I could get selling)

BoatUS.

How did they arrive at a value if there was no survey? Just wondering as I'd like to switch to BOATUS.
Man I hate auto correct.

On our 89 340, we have had BoatUS for the 4 years we have owned her. With BoatUS changing their carrier this year I had NBOA get some quotes for me and just got them back

BoatUS, SafeCo and Progressive are all within $30 of each other. Going to stick with BoatUS.

When we purchased our boat we went through a marine broker Spencer-Norman because we bought the boat from a Sea Ray dealer no survey was required they used the purchase price as Agreed Value. It all depends on who you bought yours from if it's a private party most will require a survey if it's a dealer that does a survey prior to the sale they will accept that in most cases. Switching companies most will require a survey.

I also carry a large amount of tools (over $500) on the boat along with electronics, binoculars, cameras etc make sure you have enough personnel effects coverage in case of a loss. I also have up to date photos of all items on the boat just in case they question what's onboard.

In my case, the associate used baseline info from NADA-type sources, and we discussed specifics of my boat: having both mooring cover and camper canvas, whether and what kind of upgrades we'd done, etc. I uploaded photos, as well--they specified wanting exterior/hull shots and shots showing interior layout.

We have Seaworthy/geico on our 85 340da
Insured replacement value was 19,500 for the first 2 years
with receipts on improvements now upped to 24,200
no survey was required just many photos and proof that it went across the water
by far the most reasonable rates

Thanks for all of the great advice. Called the insurers recommended and was given the following:
NBOA...quoted me thru Progressive because of age of boat..$2200 for full coverage..$650 for just liability
BoatUS...$1600 full coverage but reuires survey..and $520 for liability..was a legitimate yacht coverage policy

Ended up choosing a local New England Company with substantially cheaper rates.

...liabilty coverage at $500k and hull coverage at $40k for all policies.

By the way...used Bob and Sue's thread on "Yacht vs Boat policy" on this site as a template to ask questions about the different policies available. Its a must read for anyone buying or renewing insurance.
