I'll be making a run from the East River (actually starting in Haverstraw, NY) to Narragansett Bay in RI in May. Any and all advice on route, places of interest, and where (or where not) to fuel up is welcome.

A couple of questions in particular:
  • North or south of Fisher's Island?
  • If south, I'm very likely in The Race. What should I know?
  • It's about 360nm / 420m round trip. Plan to do it in about a week, taking the boat to my son's graduation. Am I nuts? :smt101

We haven't done a ton of ocean cruising, usually we're on the Hudson. But we did do the Atlantic City run (about 150m) in a day, that wasn't so bad.

Thanks,
Rich

Stay south of Fishers unless you are pulling in somewhere in Fishers Island Sound. no issues with the race, but go with the current if you can. As you round Pt Judith there can be some big waves if wind and current are opposed. It's a nice trip. Have fun.

I think you will have a very nice trip enjoy. If you have time, perhaps add block island. Once at the island you can rent a bike and see everything.

Here's another option if you don't want to go through the race. You can take a southly route nearer LI north shore. The in lets and harbors are a little wider and not rocky compared to Ct. With your 310's fuel load in mind, after you make your turn at Execution Rock head for LIS22, then a stright line into Mt Sini. It's an easy run into the harbor and fuel is right there. Then through Plum Gut and into Montauk for the night. Thats about it for a day of running a 31'. You top off at Star Island and plan the rest of your trip from there. New Port and then along the RI coast, or Block and a angled run into your dest. It's a great trip so have fun and enjoy. Being May and with fuel prices the way they are I don't think you will hit much traffic on the sound. Watch for lobster pots on the sound they are all over the place. Lastly, brush up on your radar/plotters navigating skills. You will hit fog by Block and the radar really comes in handy.

I'll throw my 2 cents in, plum gut sucks if you hit it at the wrong time. plus there's ferries to deal with. Fog is an issue. Like Sea gull said, after point judith sea conditions can be rough. If you decide to cruise on the north shore of LI, after mt Sinai, there's nothing until Mantauk so plan your fuel accordingly. Look out for pots, there's a ton. For fuel, if you can grab it at alpine, that's the cheapest. But if you're starting at Haverstraw fueled up, you probably won't take on much.

A few years back we took a trip from Pt Judith RI to Lake Champlain and back. It was a nice trip and one we'll remember for a long time. We left the weekend of Tropical Storm Ernesto so roller type waves got big and we had to make an unexpected stop in Milford, CT. We went north of Fishers Island (more scenic and that is what the trip was all about for us), and basically followed along the CT shoreline. Rounding NYC with the Statue of Liberty was a sight to see. One hint is that Point Judith Marina typically has great fuel prices. Where in Narragansett Bay is your final destination?

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks, it always helps to hear from people who have been in the waters you're planning to run. We'll be going all the way north to Providence, so crossing the length of the bay.

Yep, we're radar-enabled, don't have an AIS receiver, though. Looks like I should try for slack tide whether it is Plum Gut or The Race.

We were thinking about doing an overnight in Montauk, we've always wanted to see it; suggestions on a marina, or just go for broke at Montauk Yacht Club?

Rich122, the one thing I can't find on my chart is LIS buoy 22. Can you give me a hint as to where it is? Or did you mean just line up on G23 to head to deeper water?

Appreciate the gas tips. I always fill up at Alpine any time I pass it. Trying to get all the way to Point Judith with an overnight in Montauk is a little too tight for my taste, so looks like I'll pull into Mt Sinai to top up.

Thanks again,
Rich

I don't have my charts right now, and will check when I get on the boat this weekend. I will re-post then. It may very well be G23. I use the Maptech charts and use the labels to name waypoints. It's easier to spot, then i just double check the acutal number on the bouy or marker to confirm.

Have a great trip.
