Tomorrow I'm helping a friend move a boat (Regal 3880 sedan bridge) from Stony Pt NY to LI Sound and up the CT River. I have already plotted a course down and around Manhattan, bypassing the Harlem River, because I think it would be cool to go around the tip and I've never done it before. Anyway, is there anything I should be aware of? It looks like a pretty straightforward trip. I plan to stop in Mamaroneck, NY at the Brewer's Post yard for lunch and refuel. Some questions:
- Hells gate. Anything to be concerned about there?
- Any bridge clearance issues to be concerned about?
- Are there any no-wake zones on the Hudson down from the Tappan Zee and down and around Manhattan?
- If we take a short pit stop to cruise by the Statue of Liberty, will the CG or homeland security bother us?

I've boated all around LI Sound, but never around NYC, so it's all unfamiliar waters to me. I can't wait, though. I think it'll be a great trip. I'll share pics after.

Nothing to worry about. Just follow your charts. There is a construction barge on the west side of the Hudson across from upper Manhattan. He has two large white balls in the middle of the river. Lower Manhattan is busy to say the least. The ferries really churn things up. Hells Gate is a non-issue in a power boat. Overall its a pretty easy run with lots of sights. You'll enjoy it.

The statue has white bouys around it marking the security zone just stay outside them and as stated the ferrys churn things up so keep your eyes open while taking your pics! This is where radar is your buddy sometimes its difficult to tell that a ferry has left its berth until its right in front of you. The only security issue was at the UN a few weeks ago with PD and a Coast guard cutter
Try to enjoy the trip

Watch the area around the tappan zee - charted buoys may be moved for construction. Also watch for barges under tow and anchored in channel. I was advised back in May when I did the trip it was no wake approaching the construction zone until safely on the south side.

We're on it now. It got delayed a day. Very very cool trip. I'll post pics tomorrow

It started off pretty foggy. But it lifted pretty quickly.

After that it was absolutely gorgeous.

Great shots John, we love making the trip through the city when we head down for the airshow. The view of the Tap is right outside my office. I should have hitched a ride home

In July I took delivery of my 390 MY in Manhasset Bay, NY, and took it to Chesapeake Bay with my wife. We went down the East River beginning about an hour after slack tide, during ebb tide, so we had a little current with us. But like others have said, with a planing boat the current shouldn't matter much. It's "Hell Gate," not "Hells Gate." Fuel is super expensive in NY so our first stop was Liberty Landing Marina, just north of the Statue of Liberty. Their diesel is expensive but still less than anything in NY. The area around Lower Manhattan is pretty crazy with commercial vessels of all sizes mixed with recreational boats so pay attention. Sounds like a fun trip!

That video was pretty cool. Looked like a great day boating. Thanks for sharing.

Here's a cool time-lapse video of the trip.

Great time lapse video. I may be going the other way in April.I'll be picking my boat up in Westbrook Ct. in the Spring and bringing it home to the South Shore of Long Island. Haven't decided yet which way I'm going to go.
If I want to take my time and maybe make a trip out of it I'll head west through the sound, down east river, in to NY harbor, overnight at Liberty Landing and then take the ocean to the Jones Inlet the next day.
If I decide to do it in a shorter amount of time and just make a run for it I'l probably cross the sound in to the Peconic Bay, through the Shinnecock Canal, out the Shinnecock Inlet, and then take the ocean to the Fire Island.

June, I go to Liberty landing Marina. Gay pride week...lol..But really the fireworks June 25th are great to watch at from that marina. I did the trip from New Baltimore to Mount Sinai marina in 10 hrs last year..Went through the Harlem River also.

Just ran across this. Great pics, love the video. This trip is on the list for 2018.

Liberty Landing has great views and is a short Uber to Hoboken for great restaurant choices. I've made the trip up the East River and Harlem River out through Spyten Dyvuill. East River has amazing sights and there are spots on the Harlem River where you can easily forget your in the City.
I've never travelled through the sound by boat before and would love to take the opportunity to do it.

I have taken both routes to the south shore. Taking the East River is easier than going through the locks and Moriches. If the ocean is calm that is definitely a nice ride! Moriches can be tricky with the buoys that are not on a chart due to shifting shoals. If you are in the Western part of the great South Bay taking the East River may be quicker - no 5 mph zones.

Are you picking the boat from Pilots Point Marina, by chance? That's our summer home. I wonder if I know the boat.

I hear there's an anchorage near/behind the SoL. If we do that, do you know if there's any dinghy docks anywhere, on the NJ side, or Manhattan side where we could dinghy into the city, or to shore in NJ and Uber to Hoboken?

No, I've never used a dinghy in the area. It's a pretty high traffic area though where you'll be among big boats, ferries, and some ships so be careful on the dinghy.

A dinghy? Jesus, you might as well put yourself in a washing machine. There is so much going on in that area, between low flying helicopters, ferries, tugs, and barges... . That time lapsed video was fun to watch.
