Adding Transom Bench.

I'd like to add a bench seat to the transome facing the bow. I don't want to loose the storage. So i was thinking of a bench similar to this, except 52-58".

From starboard to the port transom door is ~63". Now, I need some ideas/suggestions on how to install it not to loose storage and still be able to open the engine hatch.

I was thinking using a SS piano hinge across the back rest of the bench screwed into the forward facing face of the transom. This would hide the screws behind the seat and can flip the seat up to get access to the storage areas. Also adding support legs on each corner to support the weight when in use.

Will this work? Will it last? Does anyone have a better idea? I'm open to suggestions as this is in the VERY EARLY stages of planning.

I had a 1991 220 SD and it had an optional rear seat which folded back if you weren't using it. It did have the piano hinge and fold up tubular legs. Maybe you could get one from a salvage boat yard.
 
Our 280 has a folding rear seat. It uses two folding legs in the front and two piano hinges. One hinge attaches to the transom and a full length piece of starboard (abt 8" wide) , the second hinge attaches the seat to the starboard. The two hinge setup allows the seat to fold so that the front edge is just above the deck and back edge is under the bolster.

I think I have some pictures. If I can find any I'll post them.

I'm missing something- you've got access doors across the entire transom from deck to gunnel- how can you fasten anything to the transom w/out blocking those two doors?
 
I have the same seat H.Boyd is speaking of. Your challenge will be retaining the storage and have the seat secure.
You could possibly get a Seat(look to see if your SeaRay Dealer has that aft seat for an '04 260DA) and make 3 brackets(stainless steel) that attach to the transom bulkhead in a slot form. Mount them on the bulkhead starboard and port of the storage lockers and one in the center of them. Instead of the bench seat folding with the piano hinge you will have 3 matching brackets(or hook plates) that hook into the bulk head brackets. I would reinforce the seat back with piece of angle stainless(CHA CH$NG maybe $80-90) that those hook plates would attach to with machine screws. This should carry the load well.
The seat should come with the swing down legs, so if you wish to stow it up forward or just get it out of your way to access the storage, it can lay flat.

Your idea sounds good but I'm having a hard time picturing how the hook plates work. Any chance to maybe put something together on Paint. Thanks for your input.

It sounds like suggestion is how sea ray currently designs it, which looses the storage space. I really want to keep the storage. I want to move up in size because of space already.:huh:

Even if I have to unhook the seats (as it sounds with Nehalennia's idea) I'll consider it. The transom storage is home for the fenders and rear anchor.

Does anyone know where I could find the plastic brackets for the fold-down transom seat that lock it in position on a 1993 290DA?
 
My wife and I re-do boat interiors.

We just finished installing a transom bench seat I built from scratch on a 1979 SeaRay 250 I think it is.

It turned out very nicely and our client was VERY pleased.

I just bought a 1987 268 Sundancer and will be building a seat for it this off season as well.

If I may ask....brackets for what exactly? Not sure what you're referring to exactly. Brackets to clip folding legs into or?????

Personally I'm not terribly fond of any sort of plastic brackets for anything.....eventually many of them tend to break.

Whatever you're doing....I'd suggest trying to find something metal.
 
This is the arrangement on my Amberjack. Tube legs fold up and backwards and clip into bottom of seat.Seat is hinged at back with piano wire hinge and drops down flush against the transom.

Hi Henry -I know this is a very old post. But I've just bought a Sea Ray 280 in New Zealand and the piano hinge is missing from the transom seat. The previous owner had removed the seat out of the boat. I have looked at the parts manual but couldn't find anything that referred to it. If you have pictures at all, or if anyone has a part number I'd be very grateful.

It's still winter here. I'll be opening the boat up in a couple weeks. Send me your email by pm and I'll send photos and measurements. There are two hinges. One mounts to the transom. The other attaches to the seat bottom. There is a full width piece of starboard, about 4" wide between the two.
