Has anyone added a built-in ice maker like the U-Line or Raritan to the port side gunwale locker that is just forward of the factory installed fridge? That would be the locker closest to the cabin door. I have taken measurements and the U-Line will just barely fit but before I go any further I would like to see if someone has tried this.

Blueberry, I dont know how deep that locker is. that would be the only concern. All the plumbing for the ice maker is already sitting behind ur cockpit fridge ready to go as is an outlet. So ur pretty close . Just have to see what fits. Oh and ventilation... just make sure its all open behind the hull and ice machine. U cant contain the back. Unit will overheat. Some draw air from the bottominstaed of the rear. so just be aware

Rob,

Thanks for the input. I am sure about all the diemensions working out, and I have already contacted the manufacturer that makes the "slotted" or "ventilated" locker doors for Sea Ray. They are able to provide me with a new replacement door. I do wonder if the extra electrical draw may overload the power panel. This boat is already close to the limit when it comes to available a/c.

Bluebelly, Can you tell me who that manufacturer is as I might like to contact them to make a ventilated door for me for cockpit air install. If you don't want to put it on the board, just send me a P.M. with the vendor. I thought I would just take my router and make one, but this may work out better. Thanks, Good luck with your install.

If you go through with this - please let us know how it turns out. I'd be interested in this as we rarely use that locker for storage.

My 330DA had a vent for air circulation in the back, too, in addition to the vented door. It was a round one like in the A/C duct system. It was located forward under the port side seat.

They don't draw much, especially after start-up.
I'm curious how you can draw close to 60 amps? Even with both A/C's, water heater, etc. I don't usually draw more than 40 or so...

On my boat I have three a/c units. Two that are 160000 btu and one that is 7000 btu. I also have a battery charger for a bow thruster that can draw as much as 6 amps. So if all electrical accessories are being used, my meters are almost pegged at 30 amp port and starboard. This is especially true in the winter when I use heat instead of a/c. In heat mode your units will use about 15% more electricity. I could not find the amp draw for this u-line ice maker on the net, but I suppose it draws about 2 to 4 amps at the most.

I am also very interested in this. What model number Uline ice maker are you using?

This icemaker is the U-Line Origins ss 95. You can go to U-Line.com and click on the Marine section of products and you will see the different models. They make two different models that might work. One is more of an upright model with the compressor under the ice bucket and the other has the compressor mounted behind the ice bucket. The one that is upright will just barely fit in the locker.

Bluebelly,
We have 5 a/c units, two friges, two icemkers, and a bow thruster (24v), and we spend a lot time the in the winter. I have never seen my meters "almost pegged". I'll see a little bump when water heater is on or when an a/c compressor starts but thats all.

I dont thnk the 4 amps will be an issue but i do know what he is talking about... I trip the breaker in the stern locker alot. ( exceeding 30 amps per line ) having 2 a/c's and the water heater on one line is a killer ... anyting else turns on and were cooked . ( battery charger ... hair drier, micro , cook top, toaster....)

So its always a balancing act. ITs not unusual to find my genset running when were cooking dinner and kids are showering....

WE use every once of 60 amps very often......

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a 44DA has (2)30A 120V feeds where a 510DA has (1)50A 240V feed. Big difference in supply.

Correct. What am I missing here?

It appears to me that Bluebelly indicated that he was drawing close to max power out of (2) 30A 120V feeds and you responded by saying that, "I have never seen my meters "almost pegged"". I merely pointed out that you have considerably more AC capacity and that might be why you don't have the same issue.

OK, I was thinking in terms of each consumer and 60a being 60a. I'll be on the boat this week and pay close attention to what my meters are actually indicating. While I have a 240v feed I figured that each appliance (120v) would draw the same load as Bluebelly's.

My 410DA has virtually the identical setup in the cockpit as the 420/44DA. I'm surprised that you guys are so willing to give up that locker space. I have so much "stuff" stored in that area. I know it's off topic, but where else do guys store your Everyday regular "stuff"...like cleaning materials, fly swatters, umbrellas, small parts, small tools, etc.....I think I may have to spend some time this season re-oraganizing....

Dom,
I got the same stuff as u stored there.... Thats is until I add another cockpit a/c ....

Then who knows where it will go...

Bluebely -
It would be interesting to hear if this works for you....
I do agree with you all - that locker isn't used for much - I think (key word) is where I keep my flares / safety kit - and that's about it.

Personally, I am not a fan of the ice maker - cause I don't relaly flush my water system - the water in there is from last year still - never even used a full tank... So - if I would put in a ice make r- need to stay on top of that. I prefer land-water...and then just use that for while out - to flush, etc.

I guess for me - the $20 bucks a year in ice - vs. cost of ice maker and/or lost storage space....buying ice is worth it.
