My name is Jeffrey Siegel - I'm the developer of ActiveCaptain. I was drawn to ClubSeaRay because we had a lot of people from here coming to our site and I wanted to take part in discussions where appropriate.

My wife and I along with our two labrador retrievers (Dyna and Dylan) live in Maine although we liveaboard our 53' trawler for about 9 months a year currently. Our cruising grounds are the east coast, Bahamas, and west coast of Florida.

We're frequent speakers at TrawlerFests, rendezvous, and other boating functions. Our specialties are mobile phone on boats, cruising in Maine, emergency medicine for cruisers (we're both EMT's), and of course, ActiveCaptain.

We keep a blog of our cruising that generally focuses on our dogs:

Cheers!

Welcome aboard! I run ActiveCaptain on my Windows Mobile device, too. Looking forward to the next release...once you take care of those crazed iJunk users :)

Welcome aboard! Neat lifestyle and product!

Welcome aboard Jeff. Love my Active Captain Hat. What new things do you have for us to check out. Great program, we just need to get more people adding reviews and local knowledge!

There are so many things happening I don't know where to begin...

The major thing I've been working on over the last year is getting our data spread out to other applications. We now have integration released or soon-to-be-released with Coastal Explorer, MaxSea Time Zero, Nobeltec, as well as on Furuno hardware. Just this week an iPhone app, Navimatics Charts&Tides was released for iPhone and iPad with full offline support and synchronization. It's incredible. And there are other products working on integration too (and other mobile devices).

We implemented a new Co-Ops program a couple of months ago. That's a way for marinas to give specials for a month, day, or afternoon, to attract boaters in. This program is just starting and marinas are creating their Co-Op offers. I predict that this will be a big thing in a couple of years. As you use ActiveCaptain for planning, why not also be made aware of special deals that you can take advantage of? We make it free for the marina to put up these deals (but they must be honest-to-goodness deals otherwise we won't accept them). If someone uses the deal, the marina owes us $1.99. We won't get rich from that but it'll offset some of the expense of providing everything to boaters.

And now I'm working on an ability for routes to be uploaded, modified, created, and downloaded within ActiveCaptain. This will provide a way to easily archive, backup, and share the routes you create with others. Traveling along the ICW between Beaufort and Norfolk? Why create your own route? Grab someone else's, make a few modifications, and it's available on your iPhone, PC navigation product, or Furuno chartplotter (or other chartplotters) easily. No one has created a system yet for sharing routes like this between people or between devices/computers. ActiveCaptain is the perfect place for that. This routes capability will start coming out at the end of this Summer along with a new Captains card to get more info about a captain, where they're located, what kind of boat they have, a list of all reviews they've written, etc.

Also coming is the ability to write reviews and update the ActiveCaptain data from the PC products and the iPhone. Expect to see that in the next few months too.

We now have about 100,000 boaters using our data for their planning. By 2011 we'll be at 200,000 (maybe more). We'd like to provide more utility and capability for boaters planning their adventures - whether for the weekend or for an extended cruise. I have to admit that it's been an incredibly fun project. We have met so many people who hail us on the radio, knock on our boat, or email to tell us how they're using our site. Those are the things that keep us going.

Anybody having a problem signing into active captain??

Welcome to the forum ! I joined Active Captain a few months ago as a result of reading about it here. Great site(s) !

Same results when trying to register.

It's all running now (Sunday morning). We were hacked pretty badly 2 weeks ago. We had started massive backups running along with logging. The backups went back to normal last night. Something with that made a hiccup and the database server stopped.

We're watching it pretty carefully - but sorry it was down for a few hours.

Jeff,

Thanks for the quick reply and it seems to be up and running fine for me this morning.

Keep up the great work!!!

Chuck
