I just received an IPAD for Christmas and would like to take advantage of using ActiveCaptain. Any advice in regards to this site would be appreciated..... I presently have a Raymarine E120 and C120 for navigation. What will Active Captain do for me other than giving me marina info? Additionally, what will Rose Point Navigation do for me that my existing Raymarine system isn't?

Depends. If you like customer service that is worse than Raymarine, Delta, American Airlines and United, you will love Rose Point!

Well... I guess then its a good thing that Rose Point is Windows based.. so by default couldn't use it anyway... I see there is something called PolarView and Navimatics.... Anyone have experience with either of those?

I have not used it yet but check out OPENCPN.ORG. I am going put it on a Android Fly 3 in the next week or so. JC

I have both PolarView and Open CPN. Both work very well. PolarView has the edge in my opinion and is worth the few bucks he charges.

I have both versions of Navionics and has been good. I am down loading the Navimatics app right now. I can't seem to find Polar View app??

Charts&tides in the app store has active captain. Active captain has user data on everything which is much more useful and relevant than regular chart info.

I love the Navionics app. It alone, is worth me having an iPad.

I downloaded Charts and tides and have been checking it out. I signed on to Active Captain and was checking out Ponce Inlet and was really liking it til I noticed the depths are off in Rock house creek. I then scrolled to my home lake. Lake Monroe won't even come up ;( What's up with that? Navionics has the right depth and my lake info.....hmmmmm

Did Navionics ever get Course up implemented? I thought about trying it with the iPad with Bad Elf GPS.

The charts and tides charts aren't very good. I only use it for the active captain info.

Thanks for the info... I didn't realize Navionics had an app for the iPad. I'm assuming this app is not interactive with Active Captain? Also, in what capacity do you use it? I plan all my routes on my Raymarine E120. Will it track your coarse if you plan a route? I'm assuming it will give you marina info and tides.

I will second that after waiting for over a year to see if the St John's River south from Jacksonville, Florida would eventually display, I just gave up, and removed it, Charts and Tides (Answer I kept receiving was that it was an NOAA issue) from any item I had IPAD and Iphone. except the Active Captain. In my case the Active Captain red squares were still there, but where was there, as there was no chart to view the exact location for the red squares.

I keep hoping that eventually Navionics gets Active Captain

Glad to hear it wasn't something I was doing! I saw some markings but they are all over land:huh: Wish you would have made this comment before I downloaded it yesterday:smt021 The Navionics HD seems to always line up great with the channel markers and depths. I did get a little pissed at them when they stop supporting the original version and I had to buy another version to get updates:smt089 I have my Ipad on a Ram mount beside my Garmin 740S and it has better detail in that it will line up to next marker before the Garmin does. I have to zoom out too far to get the Garmin to match the Ipad.

The app will let you set up waypoints and track routes, although I don't use these features so can't comment. I principally use mine for planning and the Admiral uses it all the time to look ahead of the current part of the journey to see what we need to prep for up ahead. Fast screen redraw speed (certainly in comparison to the brutally slow E120) and ease of maneuvering around the map means that it's very easy to check out coves and routes to plan the next day's journey. Great app for a relatively cheap price. Although I wouldn't use as my primary GPS, I've never had it lose position. I just wish there were a way for it to interface with the Raymarine gear.

It is not interactive with AC. Aside from armchair route planning, one of the best features of the Navionics app is the ability to record and share your tracks which are viewable on any computer with Google Earth. You can email or use social media directly from the app to share them. It's a nice way to allow friends and family to 'virtually' travel with you and nice for reviewing your tracks without being tied to your helm.

The cartography of the app mirrors the Navionics cartography you have on your E120 so, while marina info is there, it's not any better than what's on your chartplotter, which is why Charts & Tides is a nice supplement just for the info. The tide info is all there. Marinalife has an OK app, good for accessing their reviews and reservation system on the fly as well as raster charts.
