Last season my AC worked fine, not cooling quite as well as it use to.

This season, the Control unit appears to be working fine, the thermastat appears to work OK, good stream out of the port site, but no cool air (just air flow as the fan works continusously).

Someone told me it may need to have the freon replaced. Any comments on this??

Also, does anyone know what type of freon a boat AC unit takes??

Thanks

If you've lost refrigerant there's a leak somewhere that would need to be repaired or the unit replaced before re-charging.

Is the compressor running? Or just the fan?

I have a similar issue. Heat, No issues, will not cool. I was told to call Dometic's Customer Support Center, Dave 1-800-544-4881. I plan on calling later today. I will keep you posted.

My comment on this is, anybody that calls refrigerant "freon" probably isn't qualified to work on your a/c.............sorry, calling it freon is one of my pet peeves.

O.K. you didn't say if the compressor was running, if it is you may be a little short on refrigerant as everything elses seems to be o.k. These units hold ounces so any loss of refrigerant will affect it's performance. Sometimes a small leak is difficult to find, just topping off the charge could get you by for a few seasons. Have someone hook up gauges and see what the pressures are while it is running. Depending on the load in the cabin and sea water temperature you should be around 70 psi on the suction side and around 200 on the discharge side....the freon, oops I mean refrigerant used in these is R-22.

I repaired one in a boat last week, it was totally out of refrigerant. That meant finding the leak, repairing it, evacuating the system and charging it with refrigerant. Lighting a torch in someone's boat is not for the faint of heart, not a DIY job.

For Rumrunner...............typically these WSHP (water source heat pumps) failsafe in the heat mode. This means the reversing valve needs to be energized to get cooling. See if you can hear the solenoid click when you change it between heat and cool. If you can hear it click that means it has power going to it. It may be stuck, sometimes a light tap on the valve body will do the trick..........if you can get to it.

Hope this helps you guys,

John

Thanks for the comments and the point to R22. Yes the compresser does kick on.

And yes, I am not an "HVAC" guy, so use of correct terminology in that area is not something I focus on. I did google "Freon R22" and got a supprising number of hits.

I figure there is a possible leak, so was going to charge with a color Refrigerent (help find the leak). A guy on my dock is a HVAC guy, so my next step was to speak with him (lighting a torch anywhere near flamable material is not something I relish).

At least I have a direction to head now.
