AC / Heat Controls

My heat/ac thermostat is acting up. Sometimes it works perfect and sometimes it won't do anything even though the display is on and it says either heat or cool. When acting up it won't let you change the settings or even cut it off. When working the unit works fine. Could the thermostat just be bad?​

Im very interested in the responses. One of my control panels acts in a similar manner. The display goes crazy and none of the buttons do anything. Then its fine again. I switched touch panels from another unit to check the panel its self and it was the same thing happening to the replaced panel. I think its a circuit below in the control box..

Same occasional behavior too. It will get very dim, display erratic numerals, or lock you out. I've had success by removing the touch pad unplugging it and then plugging it back in. Always thought minor connector issue? By unplugging/plugging it cleans the contacts and all is well? But that didn't work for poster Lady Ashley so idk!
