About to pull the trigger on BoatUS. Any reason NOT to?

Tell them you want winter protection from crack block. Separate rider. $25 per engine. Their out is “it must be winterized per manufacture specs”. Still it’s worth getting.

I'm curious....if one were to fully follow the manufacturers winter layup process, how would the block ever crack from freezing? Sounds like an uphill battle get such a claim covered. I'm assuming they won't simply take your word for it, nor will the receipt for 5 gallons of antifreeze suffice :)

Well, my take is they betting that if you winterize to manufacture specs it won’t freeze, so they get a free $25. Don’t know how a claim would work but for $25 it’s better than nothing. Prolly get an independent survey to determine if man specs.

Like term life, they’re betting you won’t die this year, you’re betting you will, so either way you lose. Money or dead. Am I gonna get this year? Deciding, I pay a pro, and he did a great job last year so I don’t know.
I know it sound contradictory to my original point, just saying winter freeze is extra with them.

I had to run into West Marine today. The very helpful (but not hot) female clerk asked me if I need towing for the season. She said every May Boat US offers discounted service through West Marine for $49.95/year. I didn't read the fine print. But I already have it through my insurance.

If you read the freaking owner's manual and follow the directions you WON'T crack the block, and thus you won't have to make contact with your insurance company.

Easy peasy even for simple minded boaters.

If you give your boat to a mechanic / dealer / whatever to do it for you, then THEY have the liability.

The reason Insurance companies won't allow claims is because way too many of their customers are illiterate. That's why product manufacturers rarely print hard copies of their owner's manuals any more. Nobody reads them. If you are an astute boater, you will download a copy for your reference.

Sorry for being so negative, but its simply the way life has become. Seems like nobody cares any more. Just go do it and let someone else negotiate the consequences if it doesn't come out OK.

Just an FYI. My first year boating I signed up for BOAT US. Only to find out my insurance policy provided free towing as part of my policy. (State Farm). I used it last year. Had to be towed in. I laid it and emailed receipt to my agent and got a check a week later.
