I know....there are many threads regarding the problems with these things but I am too impatient to search for them.

I have an '89 6.5kw Quicksilver genny. It has 320 hours and has always run great. Last year I replaced the fuel pump and the raw water pump impeller. The new problem is this....

It will start and carry a load for about 20 minutes and then quit. Then it will not start. Period. When I come back to the boat the following week it will start right up, carry the load and then quit in about 20 minutes.

Oil level and pressure are good, it does not get hot, water level is good, water flow is great...???? I am not getting something. Could it be one of the sensors?

Any assistance I can get will be appreciated.

Shawn,

It sounds like a classic safety issue. Anytime the unit shuts down after 20-30 minutes and refuses to restart for hours it probably is one of three sensors: Oil, temp and exhaust temp. How do you know the oil pressure, operating temperatures are ok?

My money is on:

1) The strainer or port to the strainer is clogged....which triggered the overheat safety.

2) Thermostat not opening....triggered the overheat safety.

3) Clogged heat exchanger....triggered the overheat safety.

4) Bad safety. (oil, temp and exhaust temp)

Hopefully, it is something simple. You can confirm one of the safetys is being tripped by lifting the safety wire going to the control board after the unit shuts down. If it fires back up, you know one of the three safetys has triggered. With that you can put an ohm meter to them and see which one it is.

Thanks John. This is what I needed....to be pointed in the right direction. I will work on these items next weekend.
