A stark reminder that electrical leakage is real....

That's very sad. Just to be on the safe side, since we're in a large marina, I don't allow any swimming off our docks.

It was on this very forum where I learned about ESD.

My kids swam off the back of the boat while at the marina for almost a year before that.

Personally, I grew up doing the same.

Here is something that I wonder about though - at what level of salinity does this not occur? My marina is on a fresh water river that goes into the GOM about 5 miles away.

We get some barnacles here and there so I know there is a salt influence.

That's so sad couldn't be anything worse than the feeling of helplessness and guilt watching your own family go through this.

I'm in salt but we have a guy with a new Graddy who won't use an approved shore power cord, insists on using a cheap Wally World extension cord, lets it hang in the water. I'm going to show him this thread, maybe he will listen.

Very, very sad! But it's not the parents fault...

Of course more government regulation will just make it all better...

"The Johnsons say local laws never required them to have the faulty electric line inspected. In their daughter’s name, they want that to change."

It was their responsibility to know their dock electric service is safe.

It's amazing to me how often this actually happens every year. I personally believe that any marina in fresh water should have signage regarding swimming and the potential issues. There are MANY people who do not know that this actually happens. I did not until a few years ago when I read a similar article.

It's also a good lesson to have a qualified marine electrician do any work on your boat one bad connection can cause serious problems.
Here's an older link to boat electrical surveying.
