A rendezvous cruise to the San Juans, Gulf Islands and Desolation sound 2011

Would love to see the other website and see the dates. The family and I spend the end of June through the first of August in the San Juans and were going to go north this year.

PM sent. It would be great to have you join. Have you been that far north yet?

Nope. Never left the good ol USA. Think we've seen all the San Juans after spending so much time there over the years. Still love em but we planned to head to Desolation this year and this sounds like a great way to meet new folks and cruise with a group.

Russ.

Perfect. It's a whole different scenery compared to the lower elevation San Juan islands.
There are places that 6-7000 peaks decent right into the water and continue 400-700 feet below your keel.

This one is heading to Princess Louisa back when I had my 230OV. You can see the peaks with snow on it. It was about 90 degrees that day in July.

Westie,

Are you familiar with launches in the Vancouver area? We'll need a sling or a freshwater launch and a place to store the truck and trailer for the two week period. Any suggestions? We could launch farther north in Washington, but we might as well drive as far north as possible since we're going to be late and trying to catch up.
Westie, no help with the name of a Vancouver launch site, but if you choose to launch in WA I'd recommend Cap Sante Marine in Anacortes. They let us store the truck and trailer there for a month, towed the boat to the launch sling with their fork lift, and didn't charge me for any of the storage or their help with the launch.

They also have the cheapest fuel in the San Juans.

The usual disclaimers apply--I have no ties to Cap Sante, just a very satisfied customer of theirs.

GFC, we usually launch at Cap Sante in Anacortes. They always ding us for the parking fee! Usually it's not much, $5 a day or something like that. If you know something about WHERE to park that is free, I'm all ears!! We've slung in there and parked there the past 4 trips. It's an easy cruise from there to Spencer Spit, our usualy first stop in the Juans!

If we end up trying to play catch up next year, putting in as far north make sense for us. That's why I thought Westie or someone else might have some Vancouver suggestions, assuming I can trailer the wide load in Canada! If not, we'll probably just put in at Cap Sante again! You should join the cruise next year! You were going to head down the Columbia and up the coast anyway, right?

Sundancer, I'm not sure why Cap Sante charged you and didn't charge me. I had them put in a new shower sump while the boat was there, but that was only a couple hundred bucks total. They also launched and recovered the boat for me at no charge. Seems the Port didn't bill them for the launch (round trip) so Cap Sante didn't charge me. I told them if they later got a bill to let me know and I'll settle up with them. I never heard anything more about it.

My wife's mother is 94 years old and will be 95 in December, and in good health. We won't be taking any long distance cruises while she's around because my wife doesn't want to be far away if something happened to her mom. If we were far away she'd have to fly home and I'd have to bring the boat home alone. That's do-able, but it wouldn't be as much fun.

I've been talking with Budd's Outlet about doing a cruise up there in 2014. i know that's a long ways off, but he'll be retired then and probably in a bigger boat than what they have now.

In the meanwhile I'll probably just have to live vicariously through the journals and pics of this cruise.

The head of Princess Louisa. Chatterbox falls is at the bottom of this 6500' drop from the mountains up and to the left of this shot. About 20 miles on the other side of this mountain is Whistler Ski resort where the Olympics were this last winter.

The waterfall that is about 100' high is at the bottom right of this shot are little white dots... 50' boats.

Do you think a 268 Would have any problems handling this trip? I know I have one hell of a drive up to Anacortes to launch. I actually have been doing a lot of work up there with Dakota Creek Shipyard. From the pics im seeing, and what I have seen while I was in Anacortes, i think it would be well worth the trip.:smt001

The 268 is perfectly capable! I wouldn't hesitate if it were my boat! Drag it on up and join us!

We'll see how my first quarter finances turnout, if everything is on the up and up, I may have to venture up there for this little shin-dig. :smt001

Yeah, that size is pretty much the same as me. Absolutely fine. That would be great if you can make it. We have friends with an '83 245WE that are thinking about coming as well. This will be a great trip.

What are the dates, I did not see them in the thread? I notice that your 260 does not have radar, have you had problems on these trips without it? Our past 260 did not have it but we stayed in the Columbia. The new do not have it but have tossed the idea around. July/August can get soupy in the Islands.

Scott

We don't have radar and haven't really needed it in the times we've been in the San Juans. There are a fleet of boats in the flotilla and I know a few of them in the various speed groups have radar. We can just tag along!

Weare heading to Desolation again next summer, will have to check your itenary and find everyone along the way!

Went all the way from Anacortes to Ganges on Salt Spring Island and everywhere in between in a 1989 4Winns 245 in 2001. That was 1st week in September
