5.7 Mercruiser 350 mpi v-drive
I'm in a contract for a 310 Sea Ray w/ twin, merc 5.7, mpi, 260hp. Took boat out for sea trial and as soon as throttling up two alarms went off and engines went to limp mode. Oil pressure and temp were good. Both engines idled beautifully. Didn't matter if the boat was in gear or not, throttle up alarms.

Ideas?

Thanks
John

Agreed. Could be anything from simple faulty sensor(s) to 2 very expensive transom assembly replacements.

The seller is in the process of sorting it out, and letting me know what they come up with. The broker has a Sea Ray guy coming out to diag it. It was strange that both engines were doing the same thing. Do those engines share any systems that could trigger the alarms in both?

It sounds like you did not have your own mechanic with you on the sea trial. I hope you are having a surveyor look at before you close this deal. If you are not, there is a strong chance you will get burned in an expensive way.

I had a mechanic do comp chks. The surveyor was onboard when it happened. We just handed it off to the broker to get fixed. The water sensors were the first suspects. I just wondered, if there is something(water components, fuel component...) that the engines share?

Hooking up a code reader to the EFI engines should clear up the mystery since there was both an audible alarm and a dramatic reduction of power. Water sensors can be problematic and should one fail it will produce a double beep every minute and reduce the power to 90% initially but will reduce much further if you exceed a certain RPM. With the engine running perfectly well other than that, I'd say wait a bit to get an explanation of the fault.

Thanks, I figure I'm a little invested at this point, I might as well see where it goes. I know those in this forum have about seen, heard or smelled it all and figured I'd see if anyone had been down this road:). Knowledge is power and money in this situation. Thanks again!!

Sounds like this boat has out drives and it may be that is has sat for a while and the water flow sensors kicked in. Pretty standard on a good day. Many have taken the water out of the drives and put in external water pumps that bypass the drives and disconnect the senders.

Yep, or Bravoitis. We have no location or drive syst. info.
Water press. sensor readings low? No year of boat either...

Welcome aboard CSR. Tons of info. here and guys willing to help. It's best to complete you profile (boat info. & location) so we can better answer your questions.
Yes, sorry about that. I'll complete it as soon as I pin the boat down. This is the second one I've seriously pursued.

I should know more Sunday and will let everyone know what they found.
