A/C on all the time...

Al,

Thanks a lot for the detailed info. This sure sounds like exactly what I need to do.

Alex.

I recently had a repair to our A/C and the guy who did it suggested leaving the A/C on all the time due to the temps that the refrigerator generates. The A/C helps to control that = longer fridge life, which is good and seems reasonable to me. I set it at 76 when I leave and although having it on while we are away is a concern, so is the fridge failing as a result of generating too much heat. Just my $.02 worth.

I totally understand and agree 100%. I'm planning to do leave A/C running while we're away as soon as I succesfully switch it to "I" mode and move the thermostat probes to give me accurate readings.

I read the same thing this weekend in the owners manual about switching from continuous to intermitent.....

If you select intermittent fan operation, you should relocate the
thermistor from the return air duct to an inside wall to best
sense room temperature. Check with your dealer or call the
Taylor Made Environmental, Inc. Applications Department for
more information

Has anyone done this? Im not even sure what the thermistor looks like.

We just leave it run at 78degrees , fan running all the time. The only way to get accurate temp readings is to circulate the air. Even if you move the probe, you may move it to an area that is 'hot' or 'cool' and it may still not operate correctly. If you circulate the air, even with a fan, you are ensuring the air is mixed and the temperature is as uniform as it can be resulting in the correct operation of the ac unit.

Why do you feel you need to have the fan cycle on and off anyway? At least mine isn't that loud and they are made to run in that mode. I also agree that is make the fridge and freezer work less when the ambient temp in the salon is cooler.

The thermistor should be currently located right where the intake is. Mine can be easily seen. I did not bother to relocate mine. The idea is that you shoudl relocate it to a central part of the boat for the most accurate reading (just like you would do at a house). I have not found the system to be extremely accurate anyway so I didn't see the point. I just calibrated my thermostat and it has worked fine since. You have more cabin space so it may not be doable for you. I am not sure.

If you decide to do this, I believe Dometic has a small plastic enclosure to neatly wall mount the thermistor.

I just went through this and looks like thing are working fine. Here's the pic of original installation of the probe (IMO it's not a good location in general as the sensor is way too close to the unit and will most likelly have wrong temps reading, as mine did):

Here's where I moved it to (upper left corner, secured by the ziptie to the wires)

This is my forward stateroom unit, but the way the probe is installed on the salon unit is exactly the same. I moved the probe for the salon unit in similar fasion and my temp readings are normal.

Just our salon unit replaced in June and the new installer moved the probe about a foot into the area under the motorized couch. This is where the return air comes from and he said this will keep it balanced much better than attached where the factory had it. Our fans regulates it own speed as the unit calls for it.

Now I want to modify the old three knob control panel in order to have the fan working with the compressor only... I'll keep you posted, hoping my boat won't take fire :smt001

So, I feel one proud electrician today! I succefully modified the old three knob panel and now the fan stops with the coppressor!

If there's anyone interested I may post how to do it

Maybe its just me but I feel that the compressor has to kick on frequently enough to keep the desired temp that turning the fan off with it just makes it that much more noticable and, to me, annoying. I tried it one night and didn't like it. Plus, in such a small area I feel like the air gets stale pretty quick with no circulation.

I personally never liked the continues mode for the fan for few reasons. But the primary one is that it's not like a fridge that has to constantly keep food at specific temp, regardless whether you're aboard or away. I'm pretty sure that if you just let that unit stay turned ON all summer long you will shorten it's life big time. Having it synced with compressor and have the fam come on when the coplressor cycles it's just like you have it at home. The air gets to desired temp and the whole unit shuts off. After I made the change to my units I like it much better than how it was configured before. Also, now I can comfortably leave the thermo set to 79-80 knowing that my fans will have decent break instead of running 24/7. I like it much better vs. the "HU" mode I used in the past.

I have a question. I'm assuming that the water recirculating pump is running 100% of the time regardless of the mode chosen. How often to impellers fail on these pumps?

Yeap, that's how they all run. So, when you set it to "I" mode, the whole system goes to rest when desired temp has reached.

So when I turn on the 'Air Conditioner Pump/Relay' switch on the AC panel the pump doesn't automatically start running? Does it just start pumping any time any one of the three A/C's kick on?

Or am I COMPLETELY confused as to what it's doing?

You got it.

I've never had a problem with humidity in my boat and I never leave the AC on all the time. ( And it's pretty darn humid where we live) It's been my experience that everything "boat related" breaks down much earlier than their land counterpart, so I don't want to take a chance tempting the boating Gods using something that's not needed. I only hope that replying to this thread hasn't jinxed me. :)
