My 98 400 sedan bridge has 2 switches. One for each bank of 2 batteries, one bank starts port engine and that's all it does. My carver had a BOTH position which allowed you to use all batteries to power the house. Why could I not hard wire all batteries together? I realize that all batteries will be dead at same time but the genie is still there to charge if needed.

There are two banks of two batteries wired in parallel on our boat. Plus a fifth battery for starting the generator. One two-battery pair starts the port engine and provides the 12v power to half the 12v items on the boat. The other two-battery bank starts the starboard motor and provides 12v power to the other half of the 12v items. To see which 12v items are powered by each bank, simply look at the row of breakers in-line above each battery switch. The row of breakers above the port switch are connected to the port engine battery pair. Same for the row of breakers above the starboard battery switch. You'll see that the 12v panel on the cabin comes from the starboard engine's battery pair.

hard wiring both engine systems together will blow one of the alt. twin engines have twin systems for a reason. The odd`s of losing both systems at the same time? rare. You have a generator to charge the house batteries thru the ac charger, dont you?
Engine batteries should be just that ,ENGINE BATTERIES ONLY

Twin engine boats will not blow an alternator if all batteries are wired together. That's what the ALL position does on a battery switch on other boats I've owned. And yes I know what a starting battey is for and yes I have a generator to charge my battery, but thanks for talking down to me.
