My drain plug only screws in a few threads and then it's tight. The plug end sticks way out. Is this normal or should it screw in almost flush?

I would think that it should tighten more that "a few threads". Have you checked the threads on the plug? Inside the female end? are you using a brass plug, or a "plastic" plug?

If your threads are a little out of sorts, you can run a tap, or a thread chaser (make sure you use the correct size and thread pitch) to run inside to clean up the threads. Also, you can do the same with the plug with a "die", or you can buy a new plug.

My guess is that there is a bit of debris on the internal threads, and that running a tap through will clean it up.

Are you using the same plug that you took out? Pipe thread is tapered an usually engages 3 to 4 threads before the torque rise begins....ie tightens up.

Check your threads on the hull for sand or other debris. I think most drain plugs are 1/2-14 nptf threads. Also, a 1/2 pipe thread measures 3/4" on the od of the threads.
