I have just started my boat for the first time this year. Since I had not been able to get it out more than twice last year, I decided to pump the old gas (7gals) out and put 10 gals of fresh in. I also rebuilt the carb, replaced the dist and rotor, wires, plugs. the question is that it started great and idles (and at the first detent forward with just throttle and not under load) great. When I go to increase the throttle past that detent as if to take off, it hesitates and tries to stall. Any ideas? I plan to take it out this Friday on Lake Michigan depending on waves or another local lake and plan to give her hell and do some adjustments but I don't know anyone that don't have the engines without fuel injection. Thanks...Bill

My first thought is something wrong with the carb re-build. Most likely a lean mixture caused by a vacuum leak between the carb and manifold, vacuum hose off or leaking or improper re-assembly. Another possibility would be the accellorator pump in the carb is not working or not adjusted correctly. Or if your engine was not fully warmed up and you had cold temps, could just be the engine needed a little more time to warm up before it would accept large amounts of throttle. Pumping the throttle handle a couple of times to give it a couple of more accel pump squirts to richen the mixture will help until the engine warms up.

Thanks for the info. My brother and I took it to a local lake yesterday. The lake was like glass which made it an awesome day. I added a can of sea foam to the 10 gals that was in it before traveling so it would mix up well. I set the idle mixture to 1 1/4 out from seat and the idle setting. We let it warm up at the dock then took it out and opened her up for about 20mins. Had to feather the acceleration. We went back to dock and changed the fuel filter as it was feeling like it was being starved for fuel. We let it idle for a while then WOT for a while then idled at the lowest throttle setting. Took about 12 beers to do. I think it will take a few times out with more sea foam in each fill up. It seams to be that it was the old gunk from the old gas. I am pleased with the final result yesterday. Again...thanks for the reply.

Good to hear. It seems every year my 175 takes awhile to clear all up and run smooth. But those 3.0 engines are pretty simple. Enjoy!

Yes that is what it appears online also. There is one poor soul that I read online that does a minor rebuild each spring cause he has issues with his mercarb otherwise. I plan to move to Lake Havasu City AZ next spring so Hope that I can keep her cleaned out each week. I have issues each year with mine as well and it doesn't seem to matter what I do to it in the fall. the other fun thing yesterday was I finally was able to test out my new stereo system. It flooded out the sound of the engine. I have a Pyle car stereo (since it is stored in the garage when not in use) that puts out 320watts thru the four speakers. I just added a Rockford Fosgate Punch 250.2 amplifier and a 12" Q Logic sub that adds another 200watts. I currently have 5 speakers including the sub but also have the amp set up to add two more speakers which will be tweeters. We go to a beach here from Portage Indiana that was a warm water discharge from a power regeneration plant and you have to have a boat to get to it so it is just inhabited by boaters and I tend to be in charge of the music. At least last yr I did at the only outing we had last yr and that was before the sub and amp. My brother and I cranked some Aerosmith and it sounded awesome. The sub and amp is tucked under the dash on the port side with the sub facing down and the amp mounted to the top of it. I also made some small enclosures for my 5.25" speakers that I tuck under the sides of the dash on each side and the back is under gunwales all the way to back. They are also able to be moved to the top of the sun platform when the seat cushions are in top position. The stereo also has a remote so I don't have to get in the boat to adjust the volume or change the song. I have a SD card with rock and a low profile USB drive with the Hip Hop music that the people like to dance to. Cannot wait to get out there with my wife to Boater's Beach and really see what it can do. If interested in the diagram for the speakers or pics of the install, let me know. I drew the enclosures in AutoCAD. The stock speakers didn't even have an enclosure on the back of the speaker to make for a crisp and clean sound. It actually sounded like crap before I made the changes...Have a great season!

Just started mine for the season today, ran great! Ready to get into the water...
