runnign hot this year - any suggestions of where to start looking? Spring check up went well - no problems until now. only in the water for 3 wks! runnign betweem 180 -220 @ 25RPMs. New to boating and really could use some advise. Any good mechanics out there in Brick, NJ?

thanks for the insight - just put in a new seawater intake and gauge seems to be working. Would you think thermastat??? Local mechanic is saying risers and manifold - hate to think about that job!

You got the right idea, check and eliminate the obvious and cheaper (impeller, t-stat) before opening the wallet for the mech to check risers and manifolds. While a real mech could probably tell if the t-stat was bad with some simple little test, if your motor is older and/or has been in salt/brackish/alkaline water I would just get a new t-stat and gasket and swap it out. Cost about $25, but a lot cheaper than an hour of diagnostic time. I would think the t-stat would be clogged way before manifold ports..

My last boat had a 5.7 Alpha with an overheating prob: the t-stat was 90% corroded shut, risers etc. were fine.

Good luck!
