we have been out cruising for the weekend. this morning when starting up to depart liberty landing in nyc , the port motor wouldnot stay running. started up fine, I could rev it at higher rpms, but then would sputter and die when throttled all the way down. I had it running enough to get going and she ran like a champ when at cruising speed. when at idle speed, it hunts a little then sometimes dies. also , the v drive is chattering which never happened which leads me to believe some sort of running issue. fuel / water pump was just replaced with new unit. could there be air being drawn into th system someplace? we are now at our destination marina for the weekend in seabright nj and due to return back north to Haverstraw Monday. its raining cats and dogs at the moment as harveys remnants come through. engines are 454 mercruiser carb / hurth vdrive

I had the tranny chatter issue earlier this season. It was very loud & I had never had it before either. The mechanic rebuilt the carb & all was well afterwards.

Just throwing it out there check the tension on the belt that drives the water/fuel pump. That got me once it was a little light on the tension and higher rpm was good idle it would stall.

Since you just had it replaced unlikely it is the pump...

ok , so a good Samaritan at the marina who is the mechanical guru got in there with me and began "massaging " the carbs. first, we saw poor fuel flow coming into the barrels, so we switched tanks (I was pulling off one to counter a list for a while). he held the choke flap closed and gave the motor a few good cleanout revs which he said would pull any water out of the bowls that may have accumulated. he backed out the idle air and idle speed screws, did the same revving , then returned them back and advised sometimes junk accumulates in / around the jets and that seems to work it out a bit. he adjusted the throttle linkage and idle speed to where we needed it at. made sure the motor did not stall when shifted in fwd / reverse. end of story is ... this worked out whatever kinks were going on , and the engines performed fantastic for our trip back home to Haverstraw. cheers to the members at atlantis yacht club in Monmouth beach. our stay there was our best boating experience yet, even though we were hunkered down the first night wth the remnants of Harvey pooring down!
