I'm looking at preowned 48s and some have the 9.0kw and others have the 11.5kw generator. I'm curious on this boat what that would mean to me, what could the 11.5kw do that the 9.0kw couldn't, etc.? What are the practical considerations between the two?

Regards,
Jason

The 11.5 KW generator is a required option on boats ordered with cockpit air. That adds a 24,000 btu requirement and an 8KW generator cannot handle it in addition to the standard equipment on the 48DA.

That's a good little tidbit of information. I wonder how many people are buying the boat w/o cockpit air and are having a sales person saying "You can add it in later yourself and save a lot of money!"

Nah... that would never happen...

We have the cockpit A/C and the 11.5kw genset. We rarely run the A/C in the cockpit, but it is nice to have the extra juice when running the three A/C's below, the two fridges, a TV or two and cooking at the same time.

I also thought it was required upgrade for our hydraulic swim platform, but I may be mistaken.

9Kw seems a bit small on a 48, my last boat a 46 had 12.5kw and it did extremely well. My father has a 8.5kw on a 41ft boat and it struggles when both A/C, fridge, TV, etc. all kick in at the same time. Probably worth its weight in gold (which is actually supposed to be worth something these days) to get the 11.5kw.
