87 omc impeller

This is the 87 230 WE with the 5.7 omc i/o. Im getting a knocking coming form the outdrive somewhere. With the muffs on I get a surging of water that comes out from the muffs but water is still coming out of the exhaust. Would a bad impeller make a knocking noise? Any suggestions?

Unfortunately im stuck with twin cobras on my 268, had a bad solid thump thump thump knocking sound on one side. Turned out out it was standard issue cobra broken gears. Got a lower from sei and so far so good but i havent got a whole lot of time on it. If i just had a single i would of converted to a merc.

I can't imagine an impeller making a knocking sound.

What happens with the noise if you turn the outdrive left and right?

It maybe as simple as greasing the u joints and gimbal bearing.
