86' sea ray NO forward or reverse

lent boat to brother in law.. or should I say my wife lent boat to brother in law... he brought it back said that he was idealing out started giving it more throttle, made a loud clunk. then nothing.. just would rev... no forward or reverse... obviously something with the out-drive, can anyone give me a starting point... talked to a buddy he said that there is a sear pin that can break, has anyone come across this before...

Troy, The guys on this board can be a lot of help but They'll need a lot more details to go on. Start with information like...

What outdrive is on the boat?
Any recent service?
When was the last time the boat performed correctly?
Is the boat trailered or in a slip?

was there a smell of burning rubber if so its a coupler.

I too suspect the coupler just finally wore out. Plan on about an $1800 bill because they have to pull the engine to install the part.

If it makes a ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ noise, that's it. Coupler.

theres no burning smell or no zzzzz sound... im trying to find out more info on the outdrive.. has "omc drive system" on top of unit. only numbers i found were on the side of the unit. it is pretty worn but looked like

i assumed that it was a merc. however it looks more like a volvo. Im pretty handy mechanically speaking, however with boats im totally lost. any feedback is welcomed

Its more than likely an OMC Cobra,which were known for bad shift cables.Put the boat in gear (not running ) and see if you can turn the propeller.More help here

put in gear (not running) prop would not turn... Im assuming this is good in regards to the out drive??
