'84 Bowrider-No Reverse

Had the boat out for the first time this summer, last weekend. Boat
fired up like usual, put it in the water and boat would go forward, as
usual. After putting boat in forward, I can't go back to neutral or
reverse. I can move the control back to neutral position, but boat will
continue to slowly inch forward. When I shift control to reverse
position, boat will behave as if in forward position. I can only go
back to neutral if I turn boat off and then restart it, it will stay in
neutral as long as I don't shift control into forward or reverse
position.

Run the shifter through the gears and spin the prop by hand, Engine off of course.

In forward gear it should spin freely one way and lock the other direction. Same thing with reverse only opposite of forward. It should also spin freely both ways in neutral.

The shifter cable could be out of adjustment. When they get old they stretch out.

EDIT: It would help to put your boats information in your signature. People will flame you for it lol.

I have an 85 bowrider that I bought last year.
This was one of the first issues that I tackled.
You can manually shift into gears from the engine compartment.
If your system is like mine there should be a shift cutout switch.
The roller should be centered in the notch.
I was able to temorarily fix mine by working on it in the water floating/anchored.
Make small adjustments by tightening/loosening on the arm.
Eventually I had the shift cable and every thing replaced new.
Like was stated in another post. Once they stretch it is time..

I got it fixed. A boat repairman close to where I live replaced the shifter cables. That was my problem.

If you don't mind me asking, how much was the repair bill? I'm going to have the same thing done to mine. Mine is stuck in forward.
